Stresa and the Borromean Islands, where the comune will marry you outdoors at the tip of the fishermen’s island, with the lake on three sides.
Stresa, a town of about 4,500 people on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore, about 90 km north-west of Milan, stands on the west shore of the Golfo Borromeo facing the Borromean Islands — and three of them belong to it: Isola Bella, Isola Madre and the Isola dei Pescatori. Its lakefront is lined with grand hotels and historic villas, and the town sits on the road and railway to the Simplon Pass.
Over the years the comune has built up a real wedding service: the mayor’s room in the town hall, agreements with two historic villas, and, most recently, ceremonies in the open air on the tail of the Isola dei Pescatori. A wedding here is a day on the water — guests on boats between the town and the islands, portraits along the shore, dinner on a terrace as the lake goes dark.

Ceremonies
The historic room in the town hall where the mayor of Stresa works, for about 30 people. For couples living elsewhere, the comune’s fees of July 2022 are €500 in office hours (10:00–12:00 on weekdays, and 15:00–17:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays), €1,000 on other weekday afternoons and €1,750 on Saturdays (10:00–17:00) or Sunday mornings.
The open-air ceremony at the island’s tip, reached along a tree-lined walk, with water all round; couples dress it as they like and can rent 40 m² for a buffet. The island’s small wedding room, for about 15 people, is the plan if it rains. Fees for non-residents: €750 in office hours, €1,250 on other weekday afternoons, €1,750 at weekends.
Two historic villas in Stresa with an agreement with the comune: you can marry there and stop, or stay for the reception. They follow the island’s fees; the villa’s own charges are separate.
If you have married at home, the comune can repeat the ceremony in a private place for €1,000, added to the base fee for the day and time. Across the lake, Terre Borromeo’s Rocca di Angera hosts ceremonies and receptions in its courtyards.

Portraits
The only one of the Borromean Islands lived in all year: 350 metres long and 100 wide, with a little square, narrow lanes and tall houses whose long balconies were made for drying fish. Walk it before the day boats arrive, or after the last ones leave.
Palazzo Borromeo and its terraced gardens are best photographed from a boat or from Stresa’s shore: the island’s own rules bar visitors in ceremony clothes, and ban flash, tripods and professional equipment inside. Filming needs Terre Borromeo’s authorisation in advance.
Grand hotels and old villas along the shore, the islands across the water: an easy walk for portraits before dinner. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 21:18, with golden light from 20:32 to 21:41 (NOAA’s solar equations), though the mountain behind the town may take it a little earlier.
Through the year
Lake Maggiore is wet for Italy. Verbania, across the gulf (202 m, 1961–1990 normals), gets about 1,560 mm of rain a year: 154 mm on 12 days in May, 153 mm in June, 109 mm on 8 days in July, 164 mm in September and 186 mm in October. Average highs are 20.2 °C in May, 24.1 °C in June, 26.8 °C in July and 22.3 °C in September. Plan the island’s indoor room or a covered terrace whatever the month. Isola Bella was open from 12 March to 8 November in 2026.

Practical
The state lake service, Navigazione Laghi, stops at Stresa, Carciano, Isola Bella, the Isola Superiore (the Pescatori), Baveno and Isola Madre; its 2026 summer timetable ran from 29 March to 4 October. Be at the ticket office about 20 minutes early — in summer and on holidays there are queues — or book a private boat for the wedding party.
Stresa is about 90 km north-west of Milan, on the railway and the road to the Simplon Pass. Guests staying in Milan can come by train; guests on the islands need the boats or a private launch.
Isola Bella bans drones outright. Anywhere in Italy a drone must not fly over gatherings of people, so no flights over your guests on the island’s tail; for the lakefront and the gulf, check Italy’s drone rules before the day.
Each of you needs a certificate of capacity to marry or a nulla osta, with the originals at the office a few days before, and an interpreter, sworn in a few days before, if you don’t speak Italian. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.
Questions
Yes: the comune of Stresa holds civil weddings in the open air on the island’s tail, with its small wedding room for about 15 people as the rain plan. For couples from elsewhere it costs €750 in office hours, €1,250 on other weekday afternoons and €1,750 at weekends.
Not in wedding clothes inside the palace and gardens: Isola Bella’s rules refuse entry in ceremony dress and ban flash, tripods and professional equipment. Photograph the island from a boat or from Stresa’s shore instead.
For couples who don’t live in Stresa, the fees set in July 2022 run from €500 in the mayor’s room in office hours to €1,750 at a weekend, and from €750 to €1,750 on the island or in the villas. Repeating the ceremony symbolically in a private place adds €1,000.
More than in most of Italy: Verbania averages about 1,560 mm a year, with 8 to 12 rainy days a month from May to October. July and September have 8 rainy days each, the fewest of the season, but always keep a covered plan.
