Lake Garda
Italy’s largest lake: castles on the water in the south, mountains and lemon houses in the north.
Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake, about 370 km² and 52 km long, shared by Lombardy, the Veneto and Trentino. In the south it opens wide among low morainic hills, with Sirmione on its peninsula; in the north it narrows like a funnel between the mountains. The eastern shore is called the Riviera degli Olivi, the western the Riviera dei Limoni, for the lemons grown there in terraced lemon houses.
Couples choose a shore, then a town. Malcesine, on the eastern side, has long specialised in civil weddings in its castle; Sirmione marries couples in its old centre, near the castle that rises from the water. Guests stay in one town, and the boats take everyone to the others.

Ceremonies
Where couples marry on Lake Garda
Malcesine’s Castello Scaligero
The comune marries couples in two rooms of the castle, the Casermetta and the Sala Labia, or on the Rivellino, a terrace below the castle tower with a 360° view of the lake, the mountains and the village. The rooms are the plan for rain.
Sirmione: Palazzo Callas and the lakeside places
Sirmione’s civil weddings take place at Palazzo Callas, on Piazza Carducci in the old centre. The comune also lists outdoor places for weddings — the Spiaggia delle Muse, a few steps from the castle among white rocks, Piazzale Orti Manara beside the Grotte di Catullo, Parco Tomelleri among olive trees. Ask its registry office which can host the legal ceremony on your date.
Lakeside villas and hotels
Along both shores, villas and hotels with gardens on the water host receptions and symbolic ceremonies. A ceremony there is legal only if its comune has listed the place; otherwise it is symbolic, after the civil one in town.

Where to take your portraits
Sirmione’s castle on the water
The Castello Scaligero, built after the mid-1300s, still encloses a piece of the lake in its fortified harbour, the darsena; its wall walks and 37-metre keep look out over the water. The castle is closed on Mondays.
The Grotte di Catullo
At the tip of the Sirmione peninsula stand the remains of the largest Roman villa in northern Italy, high over the lake. It is a state museum: ask it about professional photography before planning a session.
Malcesine and Monte Baldo
The harbour and the castle from the water, then the cable car from Malcesine up Monte Baldo for the lake from above. In 2026 it ran from 4 April to 1 November, the first car up at 8:15; the last went up at 18:00, or 16:00 from 5 October.
Limone’s lemon houses
Terraces of white stone pillars on the western shore, built for growing lemons. The Limonaia del Castèl in Limone sul Garda, built in the early 1700s and owned by the comune since 1995, still grows over a hundred citrus plants. That shore is the morning side; the eastern one keeps the evening light across the water.
Through the year
When to marry on Lake Garda
The lake softens the climate, and olives and lemons grow on its shores. Verona Villafranca airport, an official long-term station near the lake, averages highs of 22.7 °C in May, 26.3 °C in June, 29.2 °C in July and 24.4 °C in September, with rain on 6 to 9 days a month from April to September (Aeronautica Militare, 1971–2000). In the north the winds keep a timetable: the Pelèr blows from the north from the small hours until about noon, the Ora from the south from about noon until sunset, strongest in high summer — calm water for photographs comes early or late.

Getting there
Verona’s airport is the closest to the lake, about 15 km away; Brescia’s is about 30 km, Bergamo’s about 80 and Milan’s about 100. Trains on the Milan–Venice line stop at Desenzano del Garda–Sirmione, on the southern shore.
Boats and the car ferry
Navigazione Laghi runs ships and fast services between the lake towns, and a car ferry between Toscolano Maderno and Torri del Benaco all year. In 2026 the winter timetable began on 5 October; boats can be suspended in bad weather or high waves, and from 1 October 2026 the Maderno–Torri ferry took no buses or lorries.
Sirmione’s old town
Traffic is restricted in the old town around the castle; in 2025 the comune closed it to cars from 14:00 to 20:00 on Sundays from June to September and on some holidays. Guests park at Piazzale Monte Baldo and walk, and in summer a shuttle runs from the Colombare car park to the castle.
Drones and the legal route
A drone follows the EU rules — registered on d-flight, insured, checked against the zones there, never over crowds — so not over a busy harbour or castle square. For the wedding, each of you needs a nulla osta, and a few days before you sign a declaration at the comune. Malcesine books its castle online; our legal guide has every step.
Questions
Questions about marrying on Lake Garda
Can we get married in Malcesine castle?
Yes — Malcesine has long specialised in it. The comune celebrates civil weddings in the castle’s Casermetta and Sala Labia, or on the Rivellino terrace below the tower, with a 360° view of the lake; you book the place online with the comune.
Can we marry legally in Sirmione?
Yes, at Palazzo Callas in the old centre. The comune also lists outdoor places for weddings, such as the Spiaggia delle Muse by the castle and Piazzale Orti Manara beside the Grotte di Catullo — ask its registry office which can host the legal ceremony on your date.
Which side of Lake Garda is best for a wedding?
The south is wide and open, with Sirmione’s castle and the railway close by; the north is narrow and mountainous, with the winds sailors and windsurfers come for. On the eastern shore the evening sun comes across the water; the western shore has the lemon houses and the morning light.
When is the best time to marry on Lake Garda?
May, June and September. At Verona Villafranca, an official station near the lake, average highs are 22.7 °C in May, 26.3 °C in June and 24.4 °C in September, with rain on 6 to 9 days a month (1971–2000). July is the warmest month, at 29.2 °C, and the afternoon Ora blows hardest in high summer.
