A walled Catalan town on the western sea, where the sun goes down over the water, with Capo Caccia on the horizon, and the portraits happen on the ramparts.
Alghero, about 41,600 people, has been Catalan in one way or another since 1354, when the Crown of Aragon took it and replaced its people with settlers; about a fifth of its residents still speak a form of Catalan, which Italy recognises as a minority language, and its place names stand equal with the Italian ones. Its walls, rebuilt mostly in the 16th century, still run along the sea with seven towers and three forts. To the west, Porto Conte bay and the limestone cliffs of Capo Caccia lie in a regional park of over 5,000 hectares.
A wedding here tends to be a town wedding that ends at the sea: a ceremony in the old centre, a walk along the ramparts as the light goes, and dinner by the water. Because the coast faces west, the sunset is part of the plan. The comune can also name private venues, beach concessions among them, for civil ceremonies, but it publishes no list: ask it first.

Ceremonies
The comune publishes no wedding page, room list or fees that we could find, only a regulation and resolutions. Start with the Anagrafe e Stato civile office or the public-relations office (+39 079 997 8512), and ask which rooms and days it offers and what it charges. It is the Giunta that sets the fees.
Since 2015 the comune’s regulation has allowed civil weddings in separate registry offices on private property of historic or scenic value and in beach concessions, on a five-year free loan to the comune. In 2017 it named the grounds of the Hotel dei Pini at Le Bombarde, and started the process for a stretch of its beach; ask whether that still stands and what else is listed. The ceremony must stay open to anyone who wishes to come in.
Begun around 1530 and in use from 1593, the seat of the diocese of Alghero-Bosa mixes Catalan Gothic with Renaissance and a neoclassical front of 1862; its octagonal bell tower, with a spire in coloured majolica, is one of the town’s symbols. We found no published rule on weddings for couples from outside: ask the parish.
A church of the Friars Minor from the 14th century, rebuilt in Catalan Gothic in the 15th, with a 1632 bell tower and a two-storey cloister, its lower level 15th-century. One of the finest Catalan Gothic buildings in Sardinia; here too, ask the parish about weddings.

Portraits
The walls run along the sea on the old town’s western side, with Capo Caccia on the horizon across the bay. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 20:59, with golden light from 20:18 to 21:19 (NOAA’s solar equations); on 15 September at 19:37.
Round the walls stand the Torre di Porta Terra and the Torre Sulis; inside, narrow streets lead to the cathedral’s majolica spire and San Francesco.
Limestone cliffs over the sea, and more than 650 steps cut down them in 1959 to Neptune’s Grotto: dramatic, but no walk in a dress. The promontory is in the regional park and the marine reserve, and commercial shoots there need the park’s authorisation (see below).
Boats leave Alghero’s harbour and the Dragunara jetty at Porto Conte, daily in spring and summer, with fewer in autumn and winter. The cave can only be entered when the sea allows it, so never make it the only plan for the day.
Through the year
At the airport station (Alghero Fertilia, 1971–2000 normals) May averages highs of 22.0 °C with rain on about 4 days, June 26.0 °C with 2 and September 26.6 °C with 4; July and August reach 29.4–29.8 °C with rain on one or two days, and October, at 22.3 °C, has about 7 rainy days. The comune’s template for private venues leaves out the national holidays and 29 September, the feast of the patron, San Michele.
Sardinia, month by month
Practical
Alghero’s airport, at Fertilia, is about 10.5 km from the town centre, with a bus about once an hour. By road it is about 129 km from Olbia and 240 km from Cagliari, so guests should fly straight here.
The Porto Conte park’s rules (2020) ask anyone filming or photographing for commercial, editorial or advertising purposes in the park or the marine reserve to apply 15 days ahead, with a deposit of 30 % of the fee and a copy of the images for the park; amateur shots are free. Ask the park (079 945005) whether a wedding session counts, and let your photographer apply.
In the park, a drone needs its authorisation too, with the operator’s certificates and ENAC’s permits. Anywhere in Italy a drone may not fly over a gathering of people or above 120 metres, and the D-Flight map shows the zones around airports where it may not fly at all.
We could not confirm the traffic rules in the old town. Ask the comune before planning a wedding car or a guests’ coach to the door of a church, and allow time to walk the last stretch on stone.
A foreign partner needs a nulla osta from their consulate, and an interpreter must be present if either of you doesn’t understand Italian. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.
Questions
We found no rule that allows it: a civil wedding takes place in the town hall or in a separate registry office the Giunta has named, and the only outside venue we could read of is private. Ask the comune, or hold the legal part elsewhere and take your portraits on the walls.
The comune’s regulation allows it in principle, in beach concessions it has made into registry offices, but we could not confirm that any is active today. Ask the Stato Civile office which ones are, and how far in advance they book.
The last hour before sunset, on the western walls. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 20:59, with golden light from 20:18 to about 21:19; in mid-September at about 19:37.
Commercial shoots in the park and the marine reserve do, 15 days ahead; amateur photographs don’t. A professional wedding session may count as commercial, so ask the park first. A drone always needs its authorisation.
May, June and September: average highs of 22–27 °C and rain on two to four days a month at the airport station. July and August are hotter and drier; October is wetter, with about seven rainy days.
