A mountain town at 1,224 metres whose comune will marry you in a hut beneath the Cinque Torri — with the Lago di Braies just over the border in South Tyrol.
Cortina d’Ampezzo lies at 1,224 metres in a wide valley of the Dolomites: a town of about 5,400 people where Italian and Ladin are both official languages. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and again in 2026, together with Milan. The slopes around it are a natural park, the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo, managed by the Regole d’Ampezzo, the valley’s historic commons, and its centre — Corso Italia and Piazza Angelo Dibona — is cobbled and closed to cars.
What sets Cortina apart for a wedding is its comune. Under its “Sposarsi a Cortina” scheme it marries couples not only in the town hall but in hotels, restaurants and mountain huts, three of them out of reach of cars. The day follows the mountain: lifts and buses for the guests, a covered plan for the summer rain, and portraits timed to the light, which leaves the valley floor before it leaves the peaks.

Ceremonies
The town hall marries couples in its council chamber on weekdays and on Saturdays. Under the comune’s fee table of July 2023, couples who don’t live in Cortina pay €330 on a weekday and €565 on a Saturday, plus VAT; residents pay nothing on a weekday.
Three huts on the comune’s list can’t be reached by car: the Rifugio Scoiattoli at the Cinque Torri, the Rifugio Faloria on Monte Faloria and the Rifugio Pomedes at the Torrioni di Pomedes. For couples from elsewhere a ceremony there costs €550 on a weekday and €770 on a Saturday, plus VAT; check the lifts’ dates for your guests.
The rest of the list, dated 4 September 2026: a hotel in town, restaurants by the golf course and at Lago Ghedina, a malga at Pocol, the Col Drusciè hut, an agriturismo at Larieto and the Olympic Ice Stadium, opened in 1955. For non-residents, €440 on a weekday and €660 on a Saturday, plus VAT.
A Catholic wedding in one of Cortina’s churches is arranged with the parish and your own; once it is celebrated, the parish priest sends the record to the comune within five days to be registered, and from then it counts in Italian law as well.

Portraits
Five rock towers rising to 2,361 metres above high pasture, with the Rifugio Scoiattoli at 2,255 metres and the open-air trenches of the First World War around them. The lift runs only by day: for the last light, ask the hut how you will get down once it has stopped.
A lake at 1,496 metres, 1.2 km long, under the pale wall of the Croda del Becco, with rowing boats for hire and a small chapel on the shore. Come at sunrise: the valley’s own site says the busiest hours are from 9:00 to midday. Bringing your own boat or paddleboard is not allowed.
The cobbled main street, closed to cars, runs past the basilica’s bell tower, the old town hall (Comun Vècio) and the Ciaṣa de ra Regoles, with the peaks above the roofs. For an empty street, walk it early in the morning.
Through the year
Cortina’s own station (1,275 m, 1961–1990 normals) averages highs of 19.2 °C in June, 21.6 °C in July and 18.6 °C in September, with nights around 9 °C in July: bring layers for the evening. For rain the nearest long series is Dobbiaco’s (Aeronautica Militare, 1971–2000), where July (120.5 mm on 13 days) and June are the wettest months and September is drier (75.8 mm on 8). On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 21:06 by NOAA’s solar equations for a flat horizon, on 15 September at 19:24 — in the valley the mountains take it earlier. The town fills to around 50,000 people at Christmas and in mid-August.
The Dolomites, month by month
Practical
Cortina has had no railway since 1964, when the line to Calalzo closed. Cortina Express coaches link it with Venice airport, Venezia Mestre and Treviso, booked on its site, by phone or on board; bookings are open for travel from 19 June 2026 to 9 June 2027.
From 1 July to 15 September 2026 the Braies valley was open between 9:00 and 16:00 only on foot, by bike, by bus booked and paid online, or by car with an online booking (€44 a day, parking and a €22 voucher included). Arriving before 9:00 was allowed, without a guaranteed space. The rules return in summer 2027.
The Regole’s 2020 regulation bans drones over the natural park, save written permits for nature films, surveys and rescue — not weddings. Outside the park, on Regole land, national rules apply, and any flight that isn’t a hobby must be notified to the Regole at least four days ahead.
Agree the place, date and hour with the registry office early, though it confirms bookings only closer to the date. Two weeks before, send the witnesses’ documents and pay; each of you needs a nulla osta, and two foreigners living abroad sign a declaration at the office at least three days before. An interpreter is sworn in if you don’t speak Italian.
Questions
Yes, with a civil wedding: the comune’s “Sposarsi a Cortina” scheme includes the Rifugio Scoiattoli at the Cinque Torri, the Rifugio Faloria and the Rifugio Pomedes, none reachable by car, and the Col Drusciè hut, which is. Agree the place and date with the registry office first.
For couples who don’t live there, the comune’s table of July 2023 asks €330 on a weekday and €565 on a Saturday in the council chamber, €440 and €660 in a place you can drive to, and €550 and €770 in a hut beyond the road, all plus VAT. The venue’s own charges are separate.
Yes, as visitors: the lake is in the neighbouring comune of Braies, in South Tyrol. In summer the valley is open by day only with a booking, so go at sunrise, before 9:00 and before the crowds, and hire a rowing boat rather than bringing your own.
Not over the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo natural park, where permits go only to nature filming, surveys and rescue. Outside it, national rules apply — never over your guests — and a professional flight on Regole land must be notified to the Regole at least four days before.
September is usually the steadier month: highs near 19 °C in Cortina and fewer rainy days than in June or July at Dobbiaco. June and July give the longest light — sunset at 21:06 on 15 June 2027 — but more rain, and mid-August is the busiest time of year.
