Jávea, officially Xàbia, has about 25 km of coast, from the Cap de Sant Antoni south past the Cap de la Nau, the easternmost point of the Valencian coast and the closest to Ibiza, about 85 km across the water. The town comes in three parts that couples tend to use in turn: the historic centre inland, built of a honey-coloured local sandstone called tosca around a fortified church; the port and its bay; and the pine-covered headlands to the south, with their coves and viewpoints.

A morning civil wedding in the town hall’s chapel sets the tone: small, old and over within half an hour. Then the day goes out towards the capes, with the reception in a private villa or a hotel: the coast here is protected and the coves are managed for bathers, not parties. The bay faces east, so anyone willing to get up early has the sunrise over the port to themselves.

## Where couples marry in Jávea

- **The Capella de Santa Anna:** A small Gothic chapel on Carrer d’Avall, all that remains of a hospital founded in 1502 when plague came often, in tosca sandstone with a round-arched door and a groin vault. The town hall holds civil weddings here and in its council chamber on Fridays and Saturdays in the morning, at 11:30, 12:00, 12:30 or 13:00. A ceremony and your use of the room last at most 30 minutes.
- **The Salón de Plenos:** The town hall’s council chamber, on the same days and hours. A councillor delegated by the mayor officiates, reading articles 66, 67 and 68 of the Civil Code; you may ask for another member of the council by email (alcaldia@ajxabia.org) at least 15 days ahead. The town hall lists a fee on its form but publishes no amount, so ask the mayor’s office.
- **The fortress church of Sant Bertomeu:** The most striking building in the old town: Isabelline Gothic, begun in 1304 and enlarged from 1513 against Barbary corsairs, with battlements and a bell tower that doubled as a lookout, and a National Artistic Monument since 1931. Its page says nothing about weddings, so ask the parish whether it celebrates them and for whom.
- **A symbolic ceremony at a villa or hotel:** Couples who both live abroad usually marry legally at home and hold the ceremony on private land: a villa’s terrace above the sea or a hotel’s garden. Beaches and coves are public coast, and the town’s tourism portal says even a photo session on them needs a special permit, limited in the bathing season, so don’t count on a set-up on the sand.

## Where to take your portraits

- **The Mirador d’Ambolo:** One of the fifteen viewpoints on the town’s route, high over deep blue water among the southern capes, with pine and limestone falling away on either side. It looks out to sea towards the morning, so go early.
- **The Cap de la Nau:** The 20-metre octagonal lighthouse of 1928 stands about 122 metres above the sea, at the cape where the gulfs of Valencia and Alicante meet. As the coast’s easternmost point it’s the place for the first light, and one of the fifteen viewpoints.
- **The Cap de Sant Antoni:** The northern cape, a cliff-top summit with a lighthouse and a 14th-century hermits’ sanctuary at its origin, facing back over the whole bay. The town’s portal calls it one of the finest panoramas on the Valencian coast, and it’s the end of the Montgó, whose park has its own photo rules.
- **The port at sunrise:** The bay faces east, with the breakwater and its small lighthouse in silhouette: the sun comes up at 06:34 on 15 June 2027 and at 07:40 on 15 September. The port is run by the Generalitat, and a shoot inside it needs its own permit from the harbour office (puertos_javea@gva.es).
- **Granadella and Portitxol:** Granadella, in the far south, is 160 metres of pebble in a rocky inlet, with a viewpoint on the road down and a path from its car park to the Castell de la Granadella. Portitxol, or La Barraca, runs 900 metres between Cap Prim and Cap Negre, with an island 300 metres out and the Creu del Portitxol viewpoint above it: both are at their best outside the season.

## When to marry in Jávea

AEMET publishes no normals for Jávea, which lies between its Valencia and Alicante stations (8416 and 8025, 1981–2010): both average highs of 23–24 °C in May, 27–28 °C in June and about 28 °C in September, and 30–31 °C in August. October averages 77 mm of rain at Valencia and 47 mm at Alicante, September 70 and 56 mm, so plan for a covered space into November. The sun sets inland: 21:26 in the old town on 15 June 2027, with golden light from 20:46 to 21:45 (NOAA’s solar equations), and 20:08 on 15 September. The town hall holds no civil weddings in June, for the Fogueres de Sant Joan (11 to 24 June in 2026), or in the Christmas and New Year weeks, after a public holiday or around official events.

Valencia & the Costa Blanca, month by month:
- **Best:** May, June, September, October
- **Good with planning:** March, April, July, August, November

## Good to know before the day

- **Getting there:** Alicante’s airport is about 100 km away and Valencia’s about 113 km. ALSA buses link Jávea with Alicante, Valencia and Madrid. There’s no train in town: the TRAM between Dénia and Alicante stops at neighbouring Gata de Gorgos, and Gandía, 45 km north, has the Renfe line to Valencia. A car or a transfer is the simple way.
- **Photo permits:** The town’s Film Office handles shoots on its streets and municipal spaces, on a form with proof of civil liability insurance. On beaches and coves a special permit comes from the Costas office in Alicante, restricted in the bathing season and hours. The Montgó park and the port each have their own. Ask whether a couple’s session counts: the page names photo sessions and doesn’t make an exception for weddings.
- **Coves in summer:** In 2026 Granadella and La Barraca had regulated access every day from 2 June to 13 September and at weekends until 12 October. Parking (130 spaces and 59) cost €9 a day from 9:00 to 19:00 until late September, with no booking, and a barrier closes the last stretch to Granadella. There’s no public transport to La Barraca; a tourist train runs to Granadella from July to mid-September. Outside those dates access isn’t regulated.
- **Drones:** Under Real Decreto 517/2024 built-up areas and beaches with facilities count as urban: a registered operator must notify the Interior Ministry at least five days ahead. The town’s filming page gives no drone rule of its own, so ask the Film Office, and the Montgó park if you’re near it.
- **The legal route:** The town hall can’t run the marriage file: it’s opened with a notary or the Civil Registry where one of you lives, and the authorisation must reach the town hall at least 15 calendar days before the ceremony. You can reserve the date earlier, with the mayor’s office. Bring two adult witnesses. Afterwards you send the record of the ceremony to the Registry yourselves.

## Questions about marrying in Jávea

### Can we get legally married in Jávea?

Yes, in the town hall’s chamber or the Capella de Santa Anna, on Friday or Saturday mornings, once you have a marriage file opened where one of you lives in Spain. Couples who both live abroad usually marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at a villa or hotel here.

### Can we marry in Jávea in June?

Not at the town hall: its page rules out June for the Fogueres de Sant Joan, as well as the Christmas and New Year weeks and days after a public holiday. A symbolic ceremony on private land isn’t tied to its calendar, but expect the fires and crowds around 23 June.

### Do we need a permit for photographs on the beach?

The tourism portal says photo sessions on beaches, coves and public coast need a special permit from the Costas office in Alicante, restricted in the bathing season. Ask your photographer to confirm it for your session and date, and choose the viewpoints or private land if the answer takes too long.

### Are the coves good for wedding portraits?

Yes, outside the summer rules: from June to mid-September the car parks fill, there’s a barrier before Granadella and no bus to La Barraca. In spring or late autumn you can reach them when you like. The surface is gravel and boulders, so plan footwear.

### Is Jávea the same as Xàbia?

Yes: Xàbia is the town’s official Valencian name and Jávea the Spanish one, and you’ll see both on the town hall’s own pages. Search for both when you look for venues or rules.
