# Valencia & the Costa Blanca

> Orange groves, rice fields around a lagoon, a city both old and new, and the coves and white towns of the Costa Blanca.

Valencia joins a medieval old town to a futuristic city of arts and sciences, in a long garden that was once the river bed. Just to the south, the Albufera lagoon and its rice fields — the home of paella — are famous for their sunsets.

Further south the Costa Blanca turns rocky: limestone headlands, clear coves and white hill towns above the sea. Weddings here happen in country houses among the orange trees, on terraces over the water and in old village squares.

## When to marry in Valencia & on the Costa Blanca

- **Best:** May, June, September, October
- **Good with planning:** March, April, July, August, November

Late spring and early autumn are warm and bright. July and August are hot and humid, better by the sea. September and October bring the year’s heaviest rain, often in sudden, heavy storms — always have a covered plan. Mid-March is the Fallas in Valencia: fireworks, bonfires and full hotels.

- **Spring:** Orange blossom scents the whole region; the days are mild and the sea is still cool.
- **Summer:** Hot, humid days, warm nights and a busy coast. Sea breezes make the hours by the water the easiest.
- **Autumn:** A warm sea, golden rice before the harvest and soft light — between the storms, the loveliest weeks here.

## Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

- **Country houses among the orange groves:** Old farmhouses and estates in the groves inland — long tables under the trees, and the scent of blossom in spring.
- **The lagoon and the rice fields:** Still water, reeds, wooden boats and thatched farmhouses — sunset portraits that look like nowhere else in Spain.
- **Coves and cliffs of the Costa Blanca:** Pebble coves, limestone headlands and pine-covered cliffs, for an elopement or a ceremony by the sea.
- **White towns and the old city:** Cobbled lanes, blue-tiled domes and terraces over the sea — or Valencia’s old quarter for a ceremony in town.

## How the light falls

This coast faces east: the sun rises out of the Mediterranean, so dawn on the beach is a real option. In the evening the best light is inland and over the lagoon, where the sun goes down behind the mountains across the water. Summer haze softens the light; after autumn rain the air is crystal clear.

## Getting there

Valencia and Alicante both have airports with flights from much of Europe, and high-speed trains link both cities with Madrid. The coast between them is an easy drive.
