Funchal became a city in 1508, by charter of King Manuel I, and takes its name from the wild fennel that grew here. It is ten parishes on 76 km² climbing from the harbour: the old town around the Rua de Santa Maria and the São Tiago fort at sea level, the cathedral in the historic centre, and then quintas, gardens and terraces all the way to Monte, some 550 metres up. Its people call the shape an amphitheatre, and from almost anywhere on it you look down at the same bay.

That slope decides the day. Ceremonies happen low down, at the cathedral or a seafront hotel, or higher up in the garden of an old estate, and the portraits move between levels: narrow streets and painted doors in the old town, then the cable car or the car up to a viewpoint for the last light. The city also has a full calendar of its own, with flower parades, summer fireworks and the New Year’s show, so check your date against it before you fall in love with a Saturday.

## Where couples marry in Funchal

- **The Sé:** Funchal’s cathedral was built by order of Manuel I, from 1493 to 1517, and has been a national monument since 1910. Its Mudéjar ceiling of island cedar was fully restored from 2019 to 2021. The cathedral itself says it holds numerous weddings all year and that Saturday ones are routine, with access to the building restricted during them.
- **Estates with gardens:** Casa Velha do Palheiro stands on the Palheiro estate, about 500 metres up on a hill east of the city: some 14 hectares of gardens begun by the first Count of Carvalhal in the early 19th century and bought by the Blandy family in 1885, with lawns, lakes, a Baroque-style chapel and camellias in flower from November to April. Quinta Jardins do Lago is on the tourist board’s venue list too.
- **The clifftop hotel:** Reid’s Palace, opened by the Reid family in 1891, sits among subtropical gardens on its cliff and helps coordinate the day itself. The Savoy Palace and the Pestana Grand are among the other hotels on the tourist board’s list: ask each which rooms it keeps as the plan for rain.
- **The São Tiago fort:** A fort begun in 1614 above the seafront of the old town, with a view straight over the Atlantic. Its Restaurante do Forte is on the tourist board’s list of ceremony venues and suits a small wedding in the old town itself.

## Where to take your portraits

- **The old town’s painted doors:** About 200 doors along the Rua de Santa Maria have been painted by Madeiran artists, in a narrow street lined with restaurants. Come in the morning, before the tables are out, and carry on to the São Tiago fort for the sea.
- **Monte:** The cable car climbs from the old town to Largo das Babosas in about 15 minutes, daily from 9:00 to 17:45. Near the top stands the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte, finished in 1818 on the site of a 15th-century chapel, with the tomb of Charles I of Austria inside. Its feast, on 15 August, fills the hill.
- **The Botanical Garden:** On the Quinta do Bom Sucesso, which the Reid family laid out as a private park in 1881: patterned beds of coloured foliage on 80,000 m², with the whole city below. Open daily from 9:00 to 18:00, closed on 25 December. A second cable car links it to Monte. Ask the garden about a session with a photographer before you book.
- **Viewpoints above the bay:** The tourist board lists 24. Among the handiest: the Castelo do Pico, a fort wall high over the roofs and the harbour; the Parque de Santa Catarina, over the port and towards Ponta do Garajau; Pico dos Barcelos, over the capital to the Desertas. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 21:17, with golden light from 20:41 to 21:34 (NOAA’s solar equations); on 15 September at 20:14. Those times assume a flat horizon, and the slopes to the west take the sun earlier.

## When to marry in Funchal

IPMA’s Funchal station, at 58 m (1991–2020 normals), averages highs of 23.7 °C in June, 26.8 °C in August and 26.6 °C in September, with one rainy day in June and about three in September; July and August have almost none. From October to March highs stay around 20–25 °C, but rain falls on roughly six to nine days a month, with 91 mm in October and 95 mm in December. Dates to know in 2027: the Festa da Flor from 29 April to 30 May, with parades on 2 and 16 May; the Festival do Atlântico from 4 to 27 June, with fireworks on the four Saturdays; the Wine Festival from 22 August to 12 September; and the New Year’s fireworks on 31 December (official calendar, subject to change).

Madeira, month by month:
- **Best:** April, May, June, September, October
- **Good with planning:** January, February, March, July, August, November, December

## Good to know before the day

- **Getting there:** Madeira’s airport is at Santa Cruz, 19 km from Funchal: about 17 minutes by car on the expressway. Strong winds sometimes delay flights, so leave a spare day before the wedding, and allow for guests landing late.
- **Parade days:** The Flower Festival’s Grand Parade runs through the streets of the lower city, and the classic-car parade along the Avenida do Mar. If your venue or the cathedral is down there on a parade day, ask how guests will reach it before you fix the time.
- **Trails above the city:** If your portraits or a sunrise elopement are on a classified walking route such as Pico do Areeiro, each person needs a booking on the SIMplifica portal since 1 January 2026, in a 30-minute entry slot: €4.50, or €10.50 for the whole Areeiro–Pico Ruivo route. Residents are exempt. Walking without one can bring a fine; the maximum for infractions is €10,000.
- **Drones:** A drone needs registration with ANAC and the Autoridade Aeronáutica Nacional’s authorisation for aerial images. Ask ANAC about the airspace around the airport first.
- **The legal route:** A civil wedding goes through any Conservatória do Registo Civil: open the process at least a month ahead (the tourist board advises one to three), with a certificate of capacity issued under six months before. IRN charges €120 at the registry in office hours and €200 elsewhere or at weekends, as of October 2026, and the place and time are agreed with the registrar.

## Questions about marrying in Funchal

### Can we get married in Funchal’s cathedral?

The cathedral holds weddings all year, Saturdays included. For couples from abroad, Madeira’s tourist board says the file starts at least six weeks ahead: your home parish sends it to the Câmara Eclesiástica do Funchal, and you tell it which church you have chosen. It also says you must be married at a registry, most easily at home, so ask the Câmara Eclesiástica what applies to you.

### Can a registrar marry us at a quinta in Funchal?

Yes, by agreement with the registrar, who sets the date and time with you. IRN charged €200 for a ceremony outside the registry as of October 2026. Agree it before you confirm the venue, since the registrar has to be free too.

### Which dates should we avoid in Funchal?

In 2027, the Flower Festival’s parade days (2 and 16 May), the four fireworks Saturdays in June (5, 12, 19 and 26) unless you want the show, and the days around New Year, when the island fills up for its fireworks. The official calendar can change, so check it again when you book.

### When is the driest time to marry in Funchal?

From June to September: IPMA’s Funchal station has one rainy day in June, almost none in July and August, and about three in September. Highs run from 23.7 °C in June to 26.8 °C in August. October to March still reaches about 20–25 °C, with rain on roughly six to nine days a month.

### Can we take portraits in the gardens?

The Botanical Garden, Palheiro and Monte Palace are ticketed gardens with their own hours, and we found no published rule on sessions with a photographer. Write to each before the day, and keep the city’s viewpoints as your fallback: there are 24 on the tourist board’s list.
