Câmara de Lobos, just west of Funchal, is where João Gonçalves Zarco stayed from 1420 to 1424, and the tourist board calls it the first place on Madeira to be lived in. Its name comes from the monk seals, the lobos-marinhos, once common in the cove. The cove is still its centre: a small harbour under black rock, with the bright fishing boats called xavelhas moored in it. Winston Churchill sat above it in January 1950 and painted it. The municipality climbs from there through five parishes, past the vineyards of Estreito and up to Curral das Freiras, the valley where the nuns of Santa Clara took refuge from pirates in 1566.

Couples come here for the contrast within a short drive: the old harbour and its chapel, a garden estate in the hills with a 200-year-old eucalyptus at the entrance, a valley under cloud, and the drop at Cabo Girão. It suits a wedding based in Funchal that wants one place with a working harbour in it, and a smaller wedding that wants to stay up in the hills, away from the city’s traffic and calendar.

## Where couples marry in Câmara de Lobos

- **The first chapel:** The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, by the harbour, was ordered by Zarco in 1420 and is considered the first chapel on Madeira. Nothing published says whether outside couples can marry in it: start with the Câmara Eclesiástica do Funchal, which handles the file for weddings on the island.
- **São Sebastião and the parish churches:** São Sebastião, the parish church in the town centre, dates from 1426 and is known for its Baroque work. Up the hill, Nossa Senhora da Graça at Estreito and Nossa Senhora do Livramento at Curral das Freiras serve their own parishes; the second is the one listed heritage building of its parish.
- **Quinta do Jardim da Serra:** An estate built in the 19th century by the English consul Henry Veitch, with gardens planted from around the world and a eucalyptus of about 200 years and 64 metres at the entrance. It is now a five-star hotel, Quinta da Serra, on the tourist board’s list of ceremony venues, with a space for civil ceremonies, a terrace and a garden.
- **Eira do Serrado:** A hotel by the viewpoint over Curral das Freiras, also on the tourist board’s venue list, with banquet rooms and a terrace. Mountain weather is part of the deal: it can be in cloud when the harbour is in sun, so keep the ceremony’s indoor option warm.

## Where to take your portraits

- **The bay:** Boats drawn up on the slip and moored in the cove, vine terraces above, the chapel at the water’s edge. Churchill’s viewpoint, then called the Miradouro do Espírito Santo, looks straight down on it. It is a working harbour, so keep the dress away from the slip, and ask before stepping onto a boat.
- **Cabo Girão:** A 580-metre cliff with a glass-floored platform over the fields of the fajã below, and the coast to Funchal running away to the east. Open daily from 8:00 to 20:00, so in June the evening light comes after closing: on 15 June 2027 golden light starts at 20:41 and the sun sets at 21:17. Come in the morning, or in September, when golden light starts at 19:42.
- **Pico da Torre:** A viewpoint with a 360° view over the municipality and part of Funchal, above the town. The harbour is at your feet, the terraces all around: a good place for the last hour of light when Cabo Girão has closed.
- **Curral das Freiras:** From the Eira do Serrado viewpoint the village lies far below in its valley, ringed by rock walls, with cloud often spilling over the top. It is a big, quiet picture for a couple on their own, and best on a day with broken cloud rather than none.

## When to marry in Câmara de Lobos

The nearest published normals are those of IPMA’s Funchal station (1991–2020), on the same south coast: average highs of 23.7 °C in June and 26.6 °C in September, with one rainy day in June and about three in September. The parishes up the mountain are another matter, since clouds often gather on the peaks in the afternoon: plan Curral das Freiras and Jardim da Serra for the morning. In 2027 the harvest show (Vindima ao Vivo) is at Estreito de Câmara de Lobos on 11 September, in the Wine Festival, with concerts in the vineyards in early September (official calendar, subject to change). Sunset on 15 September 2027 is at 20:15, with golden light from 19:42 to 20:30 (NOAA’s solar equations), and the mountains take the sun earlier.

Madeira, month by month:
- **Best:** April, May, June, September, October
- **Good with planning:** January, February, March, July, August, November, December

## Good to know before the day

- **Cabo Girão’s entry:** The viewpoint is a paid area: €5 for visitors over 12 since 1 January 2026, free for children up to 12 and for residents, paid on the regional SIMplifica portal. Everyone in your group needs a ticket. No page sets a rule for ceremonies or a commercial shoot on the platform, so ask before you plan either.
- **The fields at the bottom:** The cable car down to the Fajãs do Cabo Girão runs every day, but it leaves from a separate station at Rancho, a drive from the viewpoint, and the times published by different sources don’t agree. Check on the day, and leave the dress shoes in the car.
- **Moving around:** Cabo Girão is about 15 km from central Funchal by the VR1 expressway. The roads up to Estreito, Jardim da Serra and the Eira do Serrado are steep and winding, so a shuttle for guests saves arguments about who drives after dinner.
- **Drones:** A drone needs registration with ANAC and the Autoridade Aeronáutica Nacional’s authorisation for aerial images. Over a paid viewpoint full of visitors it is also a question for its operators, so ask first.
- **The legal route:** A civil wedding goes through any Conservatória do Registo Civil: at least a month ahead, with a certificate of capacity under six months old. By agreement the registrar can marry you at your venue: €200 outside the registry as of October 2026. Our guide to getting married in Portugal has the steps.

## Questions about marrying in Câmara de Lobos

### Can we have a ceremony at Cabo Girão?

No page allows or bans it. The platform is a paid public viewpoint open to everyone from 8:00 to 20:00, so a set-up there is unlikely to work without the operators’ permission. Most couples hold the ceremony elsewhere and come for portraits, each with a €5 ticket.

### Can we marry in the chapel on the harbour?

We found nothing published on weddings in the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. For a Catholic wedding on the island, your home parish sends the file to the Câmara Eclesiástica do Funchal at least six weeks ahead, and you tell it the church you want. Ask there first whether this chapel is possible.

### Is September a good month here?

On the coast, yes: IPMA’s Funchal station has highs of 26.6 °C and about three rainy days. It is also the harvest: in 2027 the Vindima ao Vivo at Estreito de Câmara de Lobos is on 11 September, so expect Estreito to be busy that day.

### When is the best light on the bay?

Morning and the last hour before sunset. On 15 June 2027 golden light starts at 20:41 and the sun sets at 21:17; on 15 September 2027, 19:42 and 20:15 (NOAA’s solar equations, for a flat horizon). The hills to the west close it off earlier, so go up to Pico da Torre if you want it to the end.
