Évora’s historic centre, still partly enclosed by medieval walls, has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list since 1986: a 1st-century Roman temple, a Gothic cathedral built between 1280 and 1340, a 16th-century aqueduct with cafés under its arches, and Praça do Giraldo with its fountain of 1570. In 2027 it is a European Capital of Culture, with Liepāja in Latvia, under an Alentejo word: vagar — taking your time.

That pace suits a wedding: a convent in town or an estate in the country, a day that starts late, the ceremony in the last hours of light and dinner outdoors once the heat has gone. The old town is for portraits — stone, white walls and lanes that keep their shade at noon.

## Where couples marry in Évora

- **Convento do Espinheiro:** Founded in 1457 near the city, with a church that has been a national monument since 1910, a Manueline cloister, an orange grove and 8 hectares of grounds. Religious ceremonies are held in the church, civil ones in the cloister or the orange grove; the main hall takes up to 250.
- **A convent inside the walls:** The Pousada Convento de Évora fills a 15th-century convent between the cathedral and the Roman temple, its monks’ cells now guest rooms. It hosts weddings and can be booked whole — the party and the guests under one roof, in the middle of town.
- **Churches of the old town:** Catholic weddings in Évora’s churches are booked with the parish, well in advance, as the Archdiocese of Évora asks; the religious file itself is prepared in the parish where one of you lives.
- **Estates on the plain:** Staying in Évora and marrying at a herdade or wine estate a short drive out gives you both: the city for the morning and the portraits, open country for the ceremony and the dinner. Agree the late ride back before the day.

## Where to take your portraits

- **The Roman temple:** Granite columns with marble capitals from the 1st century, in an open square beside the cathedral. Late light on the stone, then blue hour.
- **The aqueduct at Rua do Cano:** Where the Água de Prata aqueduct, begun in 1531, reaches the city, houses and cafés are built into its arches — white walls and stone that keep some shade in the afternoon.
- **The Jardim Público:** Laid out from 1863, with the remains of King Manuel’s palace (the Galeria das Damas), ‘fake ruins’ built in 1866, an iron bandstand of 1888 and a wooded corner — shade even in the middle of the day.
- **The Almendres Cromlech:** About 12 km away, 95 Neolithic granite standing stones. The câmara manages the site, and since 2024 visitors follow a circuit around the stones to protect the ground. Go for the last light, and don’t lean on or climb them.

## When to marry in Évora

Évora’s summers are among the hottest in Portugal. IPMA’s 1991–2020 normals give average highs of 25.0 °C in May, 30.2 °C in June, 33.5 °C in August and 29.5 °C in September, with 25 days of 30 °C or more in August and about 11 of 35 °C or more in each of July and August. Nights stay cool — 16.0 °C in August — so guests need a layer. Rain is rare in summer and returns in October (7.7 days). April, May, late September and October are the easiest months.

Alentejo, month by month:
- **Best:** April, May, June, September, October
- **Good with planning:** March, July, August

## Good to know before the day

- **Getting there:** Trains run from Lisboa Oriente to Évora in a little over an hour and a half, several times a day (CP timetable, September 2026). Most estates are off the line — plan cars or a coach for the day.
- **The heat:** From June to September, plan backwards from sunset: the ceremony in the last two or three hours of light, in shade — a cloister, an orange grove, big trees — water for guests, and dinner after dark.
- **2027, Capital of Culture:** If you marry in 2027, Évora’s year as a European Capital of Culture, check the city’s programme before you fix the date, and book rooms early.
- **The legal part:** A civil wedding goes through a Conservatória do Registo Civil, and by agreement the registrar can marry you at the convent or the estate. A Catholic wedding is also your legal marriage.

## Questions about marrying in Évora

### What is the best month to marry in Évora?

May or October, with April and late September close behind: average highs of 25.0 °C in May and 24.1 °C in October, against 29.5 °C or more from June to September (IPMA, 1991–2020). Keep a covered plan in April and October.

### Is Évora too hot for a summer wedding?

It is hot: the August average high is 33.5 °C, with about 25 days of 30 °C or more (IPMA, 1991–2020). Summer weddings still work with a late ceremony in shade and dinner after dark, when the air cools to about 16 °C.

### Can we get married in a convent in Évora?

Yes. Convento do Espinheiro, near the city, holds religious ceremonies in its church and civil ones in its cloister or orange grove; the Pousada Convento de Évora, inside the walls, hosts weddings and can be booked whole.

### Can we take wedding photos at the Almendres Cromlech?

As visitors, yes: the site is open, and since 2024 the câmara, which manages it, has visitors follow a circuit around the stones. A ceremony or any set-up is a question for the Câmara Municipal de Évora.
