# Where to elope in Italy: 15 places, from Dolomite lakes to a Greek theatre in Sicily

> Fifteen named spots in the Dolomites, on Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast, in Tuscany, Venice, Rome, Sicily and Puglia — what each looks like, how you reach it in 2026, when it is quiet, and the fees, permits and drone rules that apply before you say your vows there.

**In short**

- Italy’s classic elopement backdrops are the Dolomites (Lago di Braies, Seceda, the Alpe di Siusi, the Tre Cime), Lake Como’s villa gardens, the Amalfi Coast’s cliff-top terraces, the cypress hills of the Val d’Orcia, Venice, Rome’s viewpoints and Taormina in Sicily.
- At Lago di Braies, from 1 July to 15 September 2026 the road could be used between 9:00 and 16:00 only with an online booking (€44 with a parking space); a private 90-minute photo session at the boathouse before opening cost €600 and was sold out for 2026; drones are banned.
- A wedding photo permit at Taormina’s Teatro Antico or on Isola Bella costs €300 per site for photos and €400 for handheld video, with free entry for the couple, the photographer and one assistant (Parco Naxos Taormina form, December 2024).
- At the Colosseum, professional photo shoots pay €1,000 and other sites of the archaeological park €100; tripods, flash, lights or exclusive use of a space need prior authorisation (Parco archeologico del Colosseo).
- Drones are banned in all seven of South Tyrol’s nature parks, and wedding videos are explicitly excluded from the exemptions (2026); elsewhere, a drone with a camera must be registered on d-flight and flown under EU rules, with insurance compulsory in Italy.

This is a list of real places, not a mood board. For each one you get what it looks like, how you get there as of 2026, when it tends to be quiet, which rules and fees we could confirm, and the region page to read next. An elopement in Italy is almost always a symbolic ceremony — the legal wedding happens at a town hall, at home or at one of the places a comune has set aside for weddings — so the place is free to be a lake at dawn or a ridge above the clouds. How the legal side works is in [getting married in Italy](https://lensandvows.com/journal/getting-married-in-italy).

Two things decide more than the place itself. **The hour:** at nearly every famous spot, the first hour of the day is the empty one, and the mountain lifts’ first runs are the way to have it. **The rules:** a few portraits are one thing; a ceremony with chairs, an arch, guests, music or a drone is another. Parks, monuments and town squares have their own permits, and several are listed below.

## The Dolomites

### 1. Lago di Braies

A lake at 1,496 m inside the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, with a wooden boathouse and rowing boats, and the classic view south across the water to the Croda del Becco.

- **Getting there:** in summer 2026 (1 July–15 September), between 9:00 and 16:00 the road was open only with an online booking: a €44 ticket covered the transit, a guaranteed parking space and a €22 voucher for local shops and restaurants. Buses 442 (from Dobbiaco and Villabassa) and 439 (from Monguelfo station) also needed booking in those hours. The rules return in 2027, with details promised for spring.
- **Parking (October 2026 price sheet):** P4, 100 m from the lake, up to €30 for 24 hours; P3, 300 m, up to €18 a day; P2, 800 m, up to €10. Before 9:00 in high season spaces are “strictly limited”.
- **Light and crowds:** outside the regulated hours — early morning above all — the shore is at its quietest.
- **Rules and fees:** no swimming, no private boats or SUPs. The boathouse (open 25 April–1 November 2026) rents boats at €20 for 45 minutes shared or €55 private, and sells a **private photo session of 1.5 hours before opening, with the boathouse and two boats, for €600** (photographer not included; sold out for 2026, bookings open on 2 February). **Drones are banned** — a nature park and private land, with very high fines.
- **Region:** [the Dolomites](https://lensandvows.com/italy/dolomites).

### 2. Seceda

A ridge at about 2,500 m above Ortisei in Val Gardena, facing the jagged Odle (Geisler) peaks, with views across the Dolomites to the Ortles and the Austrian Alps.

- **Getting there:** two cable cars, Ortisei–Furnes and Furnes–Seceda, from 22 May to 2 November 2026, 8:30–17:30; €74 return or €49 one way for an adult.
- **Light and crowds:** the first car up, at 8:30, is the quiet time; the cable car’s own site notes that the ridge became an Instagram favourite after appearing in Apple and Sony presentations.
- **Rules and fees:** in summer 2026 the landowners charged **€5 to walk to the panoramic point**, first at a turnstile, then at a staffed cash desk on the path (June 2026). South Tyrol bans drones in all its nature parks, and **wedding videos are explicitly excluded** from the exemptions.
- **Region:** [the Dolomites](https://lensandvows.com/italy/dolomites).

### 3. Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm)

Europe’s largest high-alpine pasture, 56 km² of meadows and wooden huts above the village of Siusi — a protected landscape and part of the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park.

- **Getting there:** the road from Siusi to Compatsch is closed uphill to private cars from 9:00 to 17:00; parking at Compatsch (P2) had to be booked from 29 June 2026, €30 a day. The cable car from Siusi runs 22 May–2 November 2026, 8:00–18:00 (to 19:00 from 15 June to 14 September), about 15 minutes, €30 return.
- **Light and crowds:** before 9:00 by car, or on the first cable car; the meadow is large enough to find a corner of your own.
- **Rules:** hotel guests on the Alpe have exceptions to the road rule — ask yours. It lies in a nature park, and South Tyrol bans drones in all of them.
- **Region:** [the Dolomites](https://lensandvows.com/italy/dolomites).

### 4. Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The three towers of the Dolomites’ most famous silhouette, reached by a toll road from Misurina to the Rifugio Auronzo and a path around their base.

- **Getting there:** the toll road reopened on 23 May 2026 and runs from late May to late October. **Online booking is required**: €40 for a car (€26 a motorbike, €60 a camper), valid for 12 hours from the booked time, with the number plate.
- **Light and crowds:** early and late, when the day-trippers have gone; the path around the peaks gives several directions to choose from.
- **Region:** [the Dolomites](https://lensandvows.com/italy/dolomites).

### 5. Lago di Carezza

A small, very green lake at 1,520 m in the Val d’Ega, in the valley between the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) and the Latemar, ringed by forest.

- **Getting there:** bus 180 from Bolzano, about 45 minutes.
- **Light and crowds:** it is a short stop for most visitors; come early. In autumn the reflections turn gold and red.
- **Rules:** a protected alpine lake: no swimming. In summer 2026 a ranger enforced the bans on **climbing over the wooden fence, camping and flying drones** — your photos are taken from the path.
- **Region:** [the Dolomites](https://lensandvows.com/italy/dolomites).

> **In the mountains, plan for the afternoon storm.** July is the Dolomites’ wettest month — 120.5 mm on 13 days at Dobbiaco (1971–2000 normals) — mostly as afternoon storms. A sunrise or early-morning elopement is both the quietest and the safest; [the best time to marry in Italy](https://lensandvows.com/journal/best-time-to-marry-in-italy) has the months.

## Lake Como

### 6. Villa del Balbianello

FAI’s villa and terraced garden on a point near Lenno, on the lake’s western shore — among the most photographed places in Italy.

- **Getting there:** on foot from Lenno, about 1 km uphill (25 minutes), or by the paid taxi boat from Lenno Lido, which FAI doesn’t run. Visits must be booked; from 14 March the villa is open daily except non-holiday Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:00–18:00 (17:00 in November). Park €15; villa and park €25, guided only.
- **Rules and fees:** **wedding photo sessions are paid and must be booked in advance** with FAI (the fee isn’t published). FAI also rents the villa for civil or symbolic ceremonies, up to 130 guests — see [wedding venues in Italy](https://lensandvows.com/journal/wedding-venues-italy).
- **Light:** on the western shore the sun goes behind the mountains before the official sunset; morning and midday light the loggia and the lake in front of it.
- **Region:** [Lake Como](https://lensandvows.com/italy/lake-como).

### 7. Varenna and Bellagio

Two villages facing each other across the middle of the lake. Varenna’s coloured houses climb from the water, with a lakeside walkway, the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, running from the ferry pier into the village; Bellagio sits on the point where the lake divides.

- **Getting there:** by train to Varenna, or by car; the lake ferries link Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio — check the season’s timetable, which changes in autumn.
- **Light and crowds:** Varenna is on the eastern shore and faces west, so the evening light falls on the village and across the water. Early morning, before the first ferries, is the quiet time in both.
- **Rules and fees:** the lanes and walkways are public. Bellagio’s Villa Serbelloni gardens are visited by guided tour only (up to 30 people, €13, booking required); Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero in Varenna host ceremonies — the second now symbolic ones only.
- **Region:** [Lake Como](https://lensandvows.com/italy/lake-como).

## The Amalfi Coast

### 8. Ravello and the gardens of Villa Cimbrone

A village high above the coast, with the gardens of Villa Cimbrone ending at the Terrace of Infinity, a balustrade of marble busts over a sheer drop to the sea.

- **Getting there:** by road from Amalfi up the hill; the last stretch to Villa Cimbrone is on foot through the village.
- **Rules and fees:** the gardens are open to the public every day, ticket €10. Professional photography inside is a matter for the villa — ask before you plan a session. The villa, now a hotel, hosts weddings but not civil or Catholic ceremonies; Ravello’s civil weddings take place at Palazzo Tolla or the Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte.
- **Light and crowds:** the gardens are calmest when they open and towards closing time.
- **Region:** [Amalfi Coast & Capri](https://lensandvows.com/italy/amalfi-coast).

### 9. Positano

Pastel houses stacked down the cliff to a dark-sand beach, with the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and its tiled dome at the bottom — the coast’s best-known view.

- **Getting there:** by the coast road, the SS163, slow in summer, or by boat from Amalfi, Sorrento or Salerno in season.
- **Light and crowds:** the lanes and the beach are crowded from mid-morning in summer; sunrise and the shoulder months are the calm versions.
- **Rules:** in 2017 the comune adopted rules for photo shoots — applications 30 days ahead, fees for commercial shoots, drones banned and weddings needing the town’s authorisation, as reported at the time. We could not confirm whether they still apply in 2026: ask the comune before planning anything more than a walk with your photographer. The parish church holds no weddings from 11 to 16 June or from 5 to 17 August.
- **Region:** [Amalfi Coast & Capri](https://lensandvows.com/italy/amalfi-coast).

## Tuscany

### 10. The Val d’Orcia: Vitaleta and the cypresses of San Quirico

The rolling landscape south of Siena that UNESCO listed in 2004, across five comuni — with the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta, a small chapel alone on a hill between cypresses, and the circle of cypresses near San Quirico d’Orcia.

- **Getting there:** by car; the chapel stands on a dirt road between Pienza and San Quirico d’Orcia.
- **Rules:** the **Vitaleta chapel is privately owned** (restored in 2021): photograph it from the road and the track, and ask before anything more. The Val d’Orcia’s tourism site names the chapel and the cypress grove as photo spots and suggests the Horti Leonini garden in San Quirico for vows.
- **Light and crowds:** sunrise mist in the valleys in spring and autumn, and long evening light on the hills; summer middays are hazy.
- **Region:** [Tuscany](https://lensandvows.com/italy/tuscany).

## Venice

### 11. Venice

Canals, bridges and empty squares at dawn — the city is an elopement in itself, if you plan around the crowds and the rules.

- **The access fee:** in 2026 day visitors paid it on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July — €5 if booked by the fourth day before, €10 in the last four days; it was not charged on the minor islands, and it ended on 27 July. **Overnight guests are exempt** from the day they arrive to the day they leave, but must still register.
- **City rules (2024):** no sitting or lying on the ground, bridges, monumental steps or wellheads in the historic centre — a €100 fine. Music, singing and dancing are banned in Piazza San Marco, the Piazzetta and Piazzetta dei Leoni, **except at civil and religious ceremonies** and authorised events. A photo shoot that uses public space needs the comune’s authorisation (its form, with a €16 revenue stamp, lists “servizio fotografico”).
- **A legal ceremony:** the comune’s latest tariff we could read, for 2023–24, charged EU citizens €700 and non-EU citizens €1,700 during service hours (up to €1,700 and €3,600 outside them), plus €300 for an interpreter.
- **Light and crowds:** sunrise on the Riva and in the quiet sestieri; winter adds fog — 13 days in January on average.
- **Region:** [Venice & the Veneto](https://lensandvows.com/italy/venice).

## Rome

### 12. Rome at dawn: the Giardino degli Aranci and the Gianicolo

The orange garden on the Aventine (Parco Savello), with a terrace over the Tiber and the domes of the city, and the Gianicolo, the hill above Trastevere looking east over the whole centre.

- **Hours:** the Giardino degli Aranci opens at 7:00 and closes at 18:00 from October to February, 20:00 in March and September, 21:00 from April to August; the Gianicolo is always open.
- **Light:** the Gianicolo faces east, so at sunrise the sun comes up behind the skyline in front of you, and in the evening the city in front of you takes the last light.
- **Monuments:** in the Colosseum’s archaeological park, personal photos are free; tripods, flash, lights or exclusive use of a space need prior authorisation, and **professional photo shoots pay €1,000 at the Colosseum and €100 at other sites**. Drones only with the Prefettura’s permission and never during opening hours.
- **Public land:** in Rome a shoot that occupies public space needs a permit — and “a tripod counts as 1 m² of public land”; the 2026 fee is €1.84 per m² per day, multiplied by location factors; apply about 30 days ahead.
- **Region:** [Rome & Lazio](https://lensandvows.com/italy/rome).

## Sicily

### 13. Taormina: the Teatro Antico and Isola Bella

The Greek theatre on the hill above the sea, with Etna on the skyline, and Isola Bella, the small island in the bay below the town — both run by the Parco archeologico Naxos Taormina.

- **Rules and fees:** visitors may not enter in ceremonial dress, and commercial shoots need authorisation. Couples apply with the park’s wedding form (“Istanza Sposi”): **€300 per site for photos, €400 for video with handheld equipment, no drones**; free entry for the couple, the photographer and one assistant; personal use only, supervised by park staff, until 30 minutes before the ticket office closes. The permit covers the Teatro Antico, Isola Bella and Naxos.
- **Hours:** in August 2026 the sites opened 9:00–19:45, with some summer evenings until midnight.
- **Region:** [Sicily](https://lensandvows.com/italy/sicily).

### 14. The Tonnara di Scopello

An old tuna fishery on a small cove on the north-west coast, facing sea stacks (faraglioni) in clear water.

- **Rules and fees:** it is **private** (La Storica Tonnara). Visits run 10:30–19:00 with a daily cap and a booking; no loungers, SUPs or inflatables. It hosts weddings and events on request — ask them about a ceremony or a photo session.
- **Region:** [Sicily](https://lensandvows.com/italy/sicily).

## Puglia

### 15. Polignano a Mare and Ostuni

Polignano’s Lama Monachile is a narrow cove between cliffs right below the old town, crossed by a bridge on the old Roman Via Traiana — the venue of the Red Bull Cliff Diving series. Ostuni, further down the coast, is the lime-washed “white city” on its hill above the olive groves.

- **Light and crowds:** both towns are busy on summer evenings; sunrise over the Adriatic is the calm, east-facing alternative on the coast.
- **Rules:** we found no specific rules for photo sessions in either town; for anything more than portraits — a celebrant, chairs, an arch — ask the comune about using public space.
- **Region:** [Puglia](https://lensandvows.com/italy/puglia).

## Permits, parks and drones

The pattern is the same all over Italy. Two people and a photographer taking portraits in a public place rarely need anything. A ceremony with a celebrant, chairs, an arch, music or guests can need the comune’s permit to use public land — Rome, for instance, counts even a tripod as a square metre of it. Monuments and archaeological parks have their own forms and fees, as at the Colosseum and in Taormina. Private places — the Vitaleta chapel, the Tonnara di Scopello, a villa garden — are the owner’s decision.

- **Drones, the EU rules:** Italy applies Regulation (EU) 2019/947 (since 31 December 2020). A drone of 250 g or more, or any drone with a camera that isn’t a toy, must be registered on the d-flight portal; it flies in the open category’s A1, A2 or A3 subcategories, no higher than 120 m, and **insurance is compulsory in Italy**.
- **Drones in parks:** Law 394/1991 bans unauthorised flights over natural parks; ENAC says the restrictions it can enforce are the zones published on d-flight, and only the park authority can give permission (updated 5 February 2026).
- **South Tyrol:** no drones in any of its seven nature parks — among them Fanes-Sennes-Braies, Puez-Odle and Sciliar-Catinaccio — and **wedding videos are explicitly excluded** from the exemptions (2026).
- **Monuments:** the Colosseum allows drones only with the Prefettura’s permission and never during opening hours; Taormina’s wedding permit excludes them.

> **Have a second spot.** Cloud on the Seceda ridge, a storm over the Tre Cime, a full car park at Braies, a cruise-ship morning in Venice: every place on this list has a day when it doesn’t work. A photographer who knows the area will have a second spot nearby — ask which one before you book.

## Questions couples ask

### Where is the most beautiful place to elope in Italy?

It depends on the landscape you want. For mountains, Lago di Braies, the Seceda ridge or the Tre Cime in the Dolomites; for lakes and gardens, Villa del Balbianello and Varenna on Lake Como; for the sea, Ravello and Positano on the Amalfi Coast or Taormina in Sicily; for rolling hills, the Val d’Orcia in Tuscany; for a city, Venice or Rome at dawn.

### Can you get married at Lago di Braies?

Not legally — an elopement there is a symbolic ceremony, with the legal wedding at a town hall or at home. In summer 2026 the road needed an online booking from 9:00 to 16:00, the boathouse sold a private 90-minute photo session before opening for €600 (sold out for 2026; bookings open on 2 February), and drones are banned in the nature park.

### Do we need a permit for wedding photos in Italy?

Not for portraits in a public place. You do for a set-up on public land (a permit from the comune — Rome counts a tripod as 1 m²), and at many monuments: the Colosseum charges €1,000 for a professional shoot, Taormina’s Teatro Antico €300 per site for wedding photos. Private places such as the Vitaleta chapel are the owner’s decision.

### Can we fly a drone at our elopement in Italy?

Often not. Drones are banned in South Tyrol’s nature parks, including at Lago di Braies and on the Alpe di Siusi, with wedding videos explicitly excluded from exemptions; Taormina’s wedding permit excludes them, and the Colosseum allows them only with the Prefettura’s permission outside opening hours. Elsewhere the drone must be registered on d-flight, insured and flown under EU rules.

### Do we pay Venice’s access fee on our elopement day?

Only as day visitors on the days it applies: in 2026, 60 days between 3 April and 26 July, at €5 (or €10 if booked in the last four days). If you sleep in Venice you are exempt from arrival to departure, though you still register. Check the 2027 calendar when it is published.

### Is an elopement in Italy legally binding?

Only if it is a civil wedding before a comune’s registrar, at the town hall or another place the comune has set aside for weddings, with the nulla osta and two witnesses. A ceremony on a mountain, a beach or a terrace is symbolic, so most couples marry legally at home first.
