# Wedding venues in the Algarve, the Alentejo and Comporta: cliff-tops, wine estates and pine woods

- The Algarve coast faces south, so the sun sets into the sea only at its western end; Comporta’s beaches face west, with a long, slow golden hour over the dunes.

## Four different weddings

- **The Algarve coast:** resorts on golden cliffs, easy to reach from Faro airport, with rooms for everyone. Busy in July and August.
- **The Algarve inland:** vineyards, orchards and a palace a few kilometres from the sea — quieter, shadier, with villas for guests.
- **The Alentejo:** big estates among cork oaks, olive groves and vineyards, convents and castles; space, privacy, long sunsets and dark skies. Very hot in high summer.
- **Comporta and Melides:** pine woods, dunes and rice fields; barefoot and unhurried.

## The Algarve: cliff-tops and the coast

### Pine Cliffs — Praia da Falésia, Albufeira

A 72-hectare resort on the cliffs above Praia da Falésia. Its wedding spaces include the Tabu Garden on the cliff-top among pines, the Mirador on an ochre-red cliff and a Sunset Deck facing the sea, with two indoor halls; the operator lists the largest, Salão Pinhal, at about **350 for a banquet**. Rooms across several properties on site.

### Tivoli Carvoeiro — Carvoeiro, Lagoa

A hotel on the sandstone cliffs at Carvoeiro, with ceremonies at the Belvedere or in the Ocean Garden. Its 2026 wedding kit sets ceremony chairs for **up to 140 guests**, hosts **one wedding a day**, and ends outdoor music at 23:00 (indoors at 02:00). Rooms on site.

### Casa do Lago — Quinta do Lago

A lakeside restaurant in the Quinta do Lago resort, with a white sandy beach outside and the Ria Formosa beyond; its dining room is dressed for weddings and parties. No guest maximum is given; rooms at the resort’s hotel.

### Monte Rei — eastern Algarve

A golf and country club on about 1,000 acres in the eastern Algarve, looking north to the Serra do Caldeirão and south to the Atlantic. It hosts weddings and civil ceremonies indoors or out; its Tea Lounge takes about **80**. Villas on site.

## The Algarve inland: vineyards and a palace

### Quinta dos Vales — Estômbar, Lagoa

A working winery on 44 hectares of vineyards, with a sculpture garden under tall trees and a columned terrace in full shade that seats **up to 120**. Its 40 villas sleep **up to 100 guests** on the estate. Some couples hold the ceremony at the cliff-side chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, which the quinta puts about 20 minutes away.

### Morgado do Quintão — near Lagoa and Silves

A family vineyard with century-old vines, a 2,000-year-old olive tree, an old olive mill and a 1920s farmhouse among olive, fig and almond trees. It says there is no time limit on the party. Cottages on site; no guest maximum is given.

### Casa Monte Cristo Collection — between Lagos and Praia da Luz

A group of villas on a private hillside looking over farmland to the Monchique mountains, with two ceremony and reception options for **up to 100 guests** and accommodation for **78**.

### Pousada Palácio de Estoi — Estoi, Faro

An 18th-century palace with French-style gardens, the chapel of São José and neo-rococo salons, now a pousada with **63 rooms** that can be booked whole for a wedding. The salons take **up to 50**, the lawn garden **up to 170**.

## The Alentejo: herdades and wine estates

### São Lourenço do Barrocal — Monsaraz

A farm estate in the same family for over 200 years, near the hilltop village of Monsaraz: ancient holm oaks, olive groves, vineyards and a small lake from an old Roman dam, with a 200-year-old olive-mill room. The whole estate can be used for a wedding; rooms and cottages on site. No guest maximum is given.

### Herdade dos Grous — Albernoa, Beja

A 1,100-hectare estate of olive groves, cork forest and vineyards around a 98-hectare lake, with a bandstand over the water. It seats **up to 200** inside and on the restaurant terrace, or **100** fully indoors; **24 rooms**.

### L’AND Vineyards — Montemor-o-Novo

A wine hotel in a gently sloping, south-facing valley of vines, with the medieval castle of Montemor on the skyline. Weddings take **up to 120 indoors and 250 outdoors**, with exclusive hire for at least two nights.

### Torre de Palma Wine Hotel — Monforte

An estate dating back to 1338, with a medieval tower, Roman ruins nearby, olive groves, vines and a chapel where ceremonies can be held; restored in 2014 and now **19 rooms and suites**. No guest maximum is given.

### Vila Galé Alentejo Vineyards — Santa Vitória, Beja

A country hotel on a working wine and olive-oil estate (formerly Vila Galé Clube de Campo) whose rooms are “adaptable for weddings”; its largest pavilion takes about **250 for a banquet**. **81 rooms**.

### Herdade do Sobroso — Vidigueira

A 1,600-hectare wine estate beside the Alqueva lake, between the Serra do Mendro and the Guadiana, with a wine hotel and villas; it hosts weddings. No guest maximum is given.

## The Alentejo: convents and a castle

### Convento do Espinheiro — Évora

A 15th-century convent near Évora, its church a national monument since 1910, with a Manueline cloister, an orange grove and 8 hectares of grounds. It hosts religious and civil ceremonies; the Salão D. Vasco takes **up to 250**. Rooms on site.

### Hotel Convento de São Paulo — Serra d’Ossa, Redondo

A convent hotel in the Serra d’Ossa with a private church, cloisters and gardens over the Alentejo plain; its chapel has a permit for occasional ceremonies. A wedding requires **exclusive use** of the hotel’s **40 rooms**.

### Pousada Castelo de Estremoz — Estremoz

A castle built under King Dinis in the 13th century, with its keep, gardens and a panoramic view over Estremoz and the plain; the pousada can be booked entirely for a wedding. No event capacity is given.

## Comporta, Melides and the Serra de Grândola

### Sublime Comporta — Comporta

A 68-hectare estate of umbrella pines, cork oaks and wild dunes, with a gazebo for celebrations, outdoor decks and the Forum, a 460 m² hall with natural light. Rooms, suites and villas; no guest maximum is given.

### Spatia Comporta — Bicas, Grândola

A hotel of cabanas and villas in pine woods and lavender fields near Comporta, with indoor and outdoor spaces for weddings. No guest maximum is given.

### Vermelho — Melides

A boutique hotel of thirteen rooms with hand-painted tiles, frescoes and antiques, opening onto a garden, which hosts weddings and events. No guest maximum is given.

### Sobreiras Alentejo Country Hotel — Serra de Grândola

A 25-hectare estate on the Serra de Grândola, a few minutes from Melides and Comporta, with 360° views, **24 rooms and suites** and villas, and indoor and outdoor spaces for weddings.

## Heat, wind and light

IPMA’s 1991–2020 normals show how different these places are in summer. **Évora** averages a maximum of **33.5 °C in August**, with **25 days over 30 °C** and about **11 over 35 °C**; **Beja** is almost identical. On the Algarve coast, **Faro** averages **29.2 °C** with about 12 days over 30 °C, and **Sagres**, at the western tip, **25.9 °C** with 3. Faro gets barely 9 mm of rain in June, July and August combined.

- **Alentejo summer:** ceremony close to sunset, shade under the oaks or in a cloister, water for guests, dinner after dark. Spring and early autumn are the easy months.
- **Dark nights:** wonderful for stars, hard for photos — ask how the dinner area is lit.
- **Algarve light:** the coast faces south, so late light rakes along the cliffs and turns the rock orange; for the sun setting into the sea, go west towards Sagres.
- **Comporta wind:** on the beach the wind often picks up in the afternoon — hair, veils and candles need a plan, and a sheltered spot in the dunes helps.

## What to ask before you book

- **Exclusive use and minimum nights.** Some venues need the whole place (Convento de São Paulo) or at least two nights (L’AND); others host one wedding a day (Tivoli Carvoeiro).
- **Music and finishing time.** Outdoor music often stops earlier than indoor — at Tivoli Carvoeiro, 23:00 outside and 02:00 inside.
- **Shade at ceremony time.** Where exactly will the sun be, and what shades the guests?

- **Getting there.** Faro airport serves the Algarve; the Alentejo and Comporta are a drive from Lisbon. Who organises guest transport, and the ride back at night?

### What are the best cliff-top wedding venues in the Algarve?

Among venues that say on their own sites that they host weddings, Pine Cliffs has cliff-top gardens and a Sunset Deck above Praia da Falésia in Albufeira, and Tivoli Carvoeiro holds ceremonies on its Belvedere and Ocean Garden over the Carvoeiro cliffs, for up to 140 guests. Quinta dos Vales, inland, suggests the cliff-side chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha for the ceremony.

### Can you get married on a herdade in the Alentejo?

Yes. São Lourenço do Barrocal near Monsaraz, Herdade dos Grous near Beja, L’AND Vineyards near Montemor-o-Novo, Torre de Palma near Monforte and Herdade do Sobroso by the Alqueva lake all host weddings, most with rooms so guests stay on the estate.

### Is it too hot for an Alentejo wedding in summer?

It can be. In Évora the average August maximum is 33.5 °C, with about 25 days a month above 30 °C and 11 above 35 °C (IPMA, 1991–2020). Summer weddings there move the ceremony close to sunset and dinner after dark; spring and early autumn are much easier.

### Where does the sun set into the sea in the Algarve?

Only at the western end. The Algarve coast faces south, so at central resorts the late light runs along the cliffs instead; for the sun going down into the Atlantic, head towards Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente.
