**In short**

- Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal, so a legal wedding there follows the same civil process as on the mainland: the preliminary process is opened at any civil registry office in Portugal, in person or by power of attorney, and once it is authorised you have six months to marry.
- Madeira is mild all year: in Funchal the average daily maximum runs from 19.9 °C in February to 26.8 °C in August, with fewer than one rainy day a month in July and August (IPMA, 1991–2020).
- The Azores are wetter and greener: Ponta Delgada averages 122 days a year with at least 1 mm of rain — about 5 in July, 15 in December (IPMA, 1991–2020).
- Strong winds sometimes stop flights at Madeira’s airport: on 6 July 2025 more than 30 flights were cancelled and 15 diverted. Arrive with a spare day before the wedding.
- The Azores are one hour behind Lisbon and Madeira all year round — worth remembering for sunset times, flights and calls with suppliers on the mainland.

The islands give you things the mainland can’t: a winter wedding outdoors on Madeira, a crater lake on São Miguel, the volcano of Pico across the water from Faial. They also add a flight, weather that changes by the hour, and a photographer who may have to fly in. This guide covers what is specific to the islands; the general steps are in [getting legally married in Portugal](https://lensandvows.com/journal/getting-married-in-portugal) and [how to plan an elopement](https://lensandvows.com/journal/elopement-in-portugal).

## Getting there and getting around

### Madeira

You fly into Funchal, directly from many European cities or via Lisbon. The airport is known for wind: on 6 July 2025, strong winds in the east of the island led to more than 30 cancellations and 15 diversions in a day, and over 100 flights had been cancelled since 30 June. Build in a spare day before the wedding, for you and for anyone essential — including your photographer if they are flying in. On the island, distances are short but roads climb and wind, so a 20 km drive can take a long time.

### The Azores

Nine islands, far out in the Atlantic. Most visitors fly into Ponta Delgada on São Miguel — about two and a half hours from Lisbon, by one hotel group’s count — or into another island, directly or via Lisbon or Porto. Small planes and ferries link the islands, and flights between them are more often delayed outside summer. If your wedding is on Faial, Pico or Flores, plan the connection with a day in hand.

> **One hour behind.** The Azores keep a clock one hour behind mainland Portugal and Madeira, all year (UTC−1 in winter, UTC+0 in summer). A supplier in Lisbon saying “we’ll call at ten” means nine o’clock on São Miguel.

## The legal route

Civil marriage on the islands is the same process as on the mainland. The **processo preliminar de casamento** is opened in person at **any** civil registry office in Portugal — not necessarily one on your island — by the couple or by someone holding their power of attorney; filing online is open only to Portuguese citizens (and Brazilians with equality status). Once the registry authorises the marriage, you have **six months** to marry. Madeira alone has eleven conservatórias, from Funchal to Porto Santo, run by the regional justice directorate (DRAJ).

- **Documents from abroad** need a certified Portuguese translation unless they are in English, French or Spanish; public documents from another EU country need no apostille, and others may — ask the conservatória before ordering, and in the right sequence so nothing goes stale ([a civil wedding for foreigners](https://lensandvows.com/journal/civil-wedding-portugal-documents) has the details).
- **The ceremony** is in Portuguese, with an interpreter if either of you needs one.
- **At a venue:** by arrangement a registrar can marry you outside the registry office, for an IRN fee of €200 instead of €120 plus the registrar’s transport; ask the conservatória whether that works for your date, hour and place before you book the venue around it.
- **Symbolic instead:** many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the island — then the place, the hour and the language are yours.

Every step, document and caveat is in [getting legally married in Portugal](https://lensandvows.com/journal/getting-married-in-portugal).

## When to go: the weather by IPMA’s numbers

IPMA’s 1991–2020 normals for Funchal and Ponta Delgada show two very different islands. Both stations are on the coast: Madeira’s mountains and north coast get more cloud and rain than Funchal, and the Azores’ crater rims are cooler and cloudier than Ponta Delgada.

| Month | Funchal: average max | Funchal: days with rain | Ponta Delgada: average max | Ponta Delgada: days with rain |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| January | 20.0 °C | 6 | 17.5 °C | 13 |
| February | 19.9 °C | 6 | 17.4 °C | 11 |
| March | 20.6 °C | 6 | 17.9 °C | 12 |
| April | 21.0 °C | 5 | 18.8 °C | 10 |
| May | 22.0 °C | 3 | 20.2 °C | 9 |
| June | 23.7 °C | 1 | 22.4 °C | 7 |
| July | 25.4 °C | 0.3 | 24.7 °C | 5 |
| August | 26.8 °C | 0.4 | 26.0 °C | 7 |
| September | 26.6 °C | 3 | 25.0 °C | 9 |
| October | 25.2 °C | 7 | 22.6 °C | 14 |
| November | 22.8 °C | 7 | 19.9 °C | 12 |
| December | 21.0 °C | 9 | 18.3 °C | 15 |

- **Madeira:** every month works. June to September is dry and warm on the south coast; spring is the island in flower; winter is mild by the sea. Around New Year the island fills up for its fireworks — book early or avoid those days.
- **The Azores:** summer is the season — June to September is the warmest and most settled, with hydrangeas along the roads in early summer. The rest of the year is greener, wetter and windier, and beautiful for couples who don’t mind weather.

Days with rain are days with at least 1 mm, rounded. For the mainland regions month by month, see [the best months by region](https://lensandvows.com/journal/best-months-by-region).

## Madeira: venues that host weddings

Kinds of place on Madeira: grand hotels on the Funchal cliffs, old quintas with tropical gardens above the bay, design hotels, and a few estates on the wilder north coast. Five that say on their own sites that they host weddings (checked October 2026; **check directly with the venue**):

### Reid’s Palace — Funchal

A Belmond hotel on a cliff above the Atlantic in Funchal, with subtropical gardens. Ceremonies in the Palm Garden (**up to 100**) or at the Gazebo with ocean views (**up to 180**); indoor rooms from a salon for 30 to the Pool Restaurant for 250. Full takeovers are possible.

**For photos:** the ocean below the gardens, and plenty of indoor rooms if a shower passes.

### Palheiro Estate — Funchal

A historic estate on a hill east of Funchal, at about 500 m, whose gardens were begun by the first Count of Carvalhal in the early 19th century and which the Blandy family has owned since 1885. Weddings use the Pavilion, the historic chapel, the gardens and the Balancal terrace over Funchal Bay; guests stay at the Casa Velha do Palheiro hotel or Palheiro Village. No guest maximum is given.

**For photos:** camellias (best from November to April), old trees, lawns and a baroque chapel — and the bay below.

### Savoy Palace — Funchal

A large hotel in Funchal whose ballroom takes **up to 1,000** and divides into up to five spaces — the island’s choice for a very large wedding.

**For photos:** plan portraits outside the hotel — the gardens of Funchal or the mountains — to balance a big indoor reception.

### Saccharum — Calheta

A design resort of the same group in Calheta, on Madeira’s south-west coast, listed on the group’s weddings and celebrations page. No guest maximum is given.

**For photos:** the south-west coast and the sea at sunset — ask where they hold ceremonies.

### Quinta do Furão — Santana

A hotel on a cliff-top at Achada do Gramacho, Santana, on the north-east coast, which lists harvest parties, weddings and events among what it does. No guest maximum is given on its site.

**For photos:** a dramatic north coast — greener, cloudier and wilder than Funchal; have a covered plan.

## The Azores: venues that host weddings

Kinds of place in the Azores: sea-front hotels on São Miguel’s south coast, restored manor houses and farmhouses, and small rural villages on the outer islands. Five that say on their own or their group’s site that they host weddings (October 2026; **check directly with the venue**):

### Caloura Hotel Resort — Água de Pau, São Miguel

A hotel on São Miguel’s south coast with direct views of the Atlantic and access to a natural volcanic sea pool. Its event room is presented as “perfect for conferences, weddings and special celebrations”. No guest maximum is given.

**For photos:** black volcanic rock, the sea pool and the open ocean.

### Pestana Bahia Praia — Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel

A beach hotel at Praia de Água d’Alto with a large garden that holds a 17th-century chapel; Pestana lists it among its wedding venues in the Azores. No guest maximum is given.

**For photos:** the chapel in the garden and the beach in front.

### Solar Branco Eco Estate — São Miguel

A restored heritage house, over a century old, with gardens and views across green hills to the ocean; the estate can be hired for weddings, with parking for over 20 cars. No guest maximum is given.

**For photos:** a private estate in the green interior — the Azores most people picture.

### Hotel do Canal — Horta, Faial

A sea-front hotel in Horta looking across the channel at Pico, the highest mountain in Portugal. Its Salão Insulana, listed for weddings, takes banquets **from about 47 guests** and up to **150** seated in rows.

**For photos:** Pico’s cone across the water — when the cloud lifts off it.

### Aldeia da Cuada — Flores

A rural-tourism village on Flores, built “where land and sea meet”, with what it describes as the oldest chapel on the island; it caters, decorates and lodges guests for weddings. No guest maximum is given.

**For photos:** village houses by the sea and an old chapel on Flores — for a small wedding with time to spare.

## Elopement spots on the islands

For a ceremony for two, the islands’ best-known spots are **Pico do Arieiro** (sunrise above the clouds, reached by road), **Fanal** (ancient til trees in the fog), **Ponta de São Lourenço** (bare volcanic peninsula), **Sete Cidades** (twin lakes in a caldera) and **Lagoa do Fogo** (a crater lake with no buildings). Madeira’s classified trails need a booked slot and a fee for non-residents. Details, access and rules for each are in [where to elope in Portugal](https://lensandvows.com/journal/where-to-elope-in-portugal).

## What is different for the photos

- **Light that moves.** Hard sun on Madeira’s south coast, soft cloud light in the forest and on the peaks, the clearest air at dawn. Photographers who know the islands plan two or three spots and follow the gaps in the sky.
- **Fog as a feature.** At Fanal or on a crater rim, fog is the point — but if your heart is set on the view at Sete Cidades or Lagoa do Fogo, keep the morning flexible.
- **Wind.** Exposed headlands and peaks are windy most of the time. A veil will fly; bring weights, a shorter veil or a plan to take it off.
- **Afternoon cloud.** On Madeira, clouds often gather on the peaks in the afternoon — the high spots are a morning job.
- **Your photographer’s travel.** If they come from the mainland, the flight, a night or two and the spare weather day are part of the quote. Ask who books what — see [what a wedding photographer costs](https://lensandvows.com/journal/wedding-photographer-cost-portugal).

## Questions couples ask

### Can foreigners get legally married on Madeira or in the Azores?

Yes, through the same civil process as on the mainland. The preliminary process is opened in person or by power of attorney at any civil registry office in Portugal, documents from abroad need a certified translation unless they are in English, French or Spanish (and EU public documents no apostille), the ceremony is in Portuguese with an interpreter if needed, and once authorised you have six months to marry.

### What is the best month for a wedding on Madeira?

Any month can work, which is Madeira’s great advantage. For the driest weather on the south coast, June to September: Funchal averages about one rainy day in June and fewer than one in July and August (IPMA, 1991–2020). For mild weather and flowers with fewer crowds, spring.

### What is the best time of year for an Azores wedding?

June to September. Ponta Delgada averages about 5 days with rain in July and 7 in June and August, against 13–15 in December and January (IPMA, 1991–2020), and early summer brings the hydrangeas. Even in summer, cloud can cover a crater in minutes, so plan a second spot.

### Do flights to Madeira get cancelled because of wind?

Sometimes. On 6 July 2025, strong winds led to more than 30 cancellations and 15 diversions at Madeira’s airport in a single day, with over 100 cancellations since 30 June. Couples usually arrive at least a day before the wedding and ask key guests and the photographer to do the same.

### Are the Azores in a different time zone from Lisbon?

Yes. The Azores are one hour behind mainland Portugal and Madeira all year: UTC−1 in winter and UTC+0 in summer. Madeira keeps the same time as Lisbon.

### Where can we get married on Madeira with a sea view?

Reid’s Palace in Funchal has a cliff-top Palm Garden (up to 100 guests) and a Gazebo with ocean views (up to 180). The Palheiro Estate’s Balancal terrace looks over Funchal Bay, and Quinta do Furão sits on a cliff-top on the north-east coast.

### Can we have a wedding on Faial with a view of Pico?

Yes. Hotel do Canal in Horta looks across the channel at Pico, Portugal’s highest mountain, and lists its Salão Insulana for weddings, with banquets from about 47 guests and up to 150 seated in rows.
