**In short**

- May, June, September and October are the classic wedding months in most of Italy: in Florence the average high is 23.7 °C in May and 26.7 °C in September, with rain on about 8 and 6 days (Aeronautica Militare normals, 1971–2000).
- July and August are the hottest and driest months: average highs of 30–31.5 °C in Florence, Rome and Naples, and in Palermo just 5 mm of July rain on one day — so outdoor ceremonies move to the last hours of the day.
- The lakes and the mountains run the other way: summer is their season but also their wettest time — the Dolomites average 120.5 mm of rain on 13 days in July at Dobbiaco, and Como’s wettest month is May (161 mm).
- On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 20:59 in Florence, 20:47 in Rome, 21:01 in Venice and 20:27 in Bari; on 15 December between 16:25 (Bari) and 16:48 (Palermo). Evening golden hour lasts 51 to 70 minutes.
- Italy’s clocks go forward on 28 March 2027 — Easter Sunday that year — and back on 31 October: Florence’s sunset jumps from 18:35 to 19:37, and back from 18:09 to 17:07.

Italy runs over a thousand kilometres from the Alps to Sicily, so “the best month” depends on where you marry. The south and the islands stay warm into October; the cities of the centre are best in late spring and early autumn; the lakes and the Dolomites have their season in summer. This guide puts the official numbers side by side, then the light — when the sun sets and how long the golden hour lasts — and ends month by month.

Two things to keep in mind when you read the tables. They are **30-year averages**, not a forecast: any given June can be wetter or hotter. And they come from **airport stations**: villages in the hills are cooler, places by the sea milder at night. ## When does it rain?

Days with at least 1 mm of rain, on average, with the month’s total in brackets for the wettest and driest. The centre and the south share a pattern — dry summers, wet autumns — while Venice, the lakes and the mountains get their rain in the warm months.

| Month | Florence | Rome | Venice | Naples | Bari | Palermo | Como | Dolomites |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| January | 8 | 7 | 6 | 9 | 7 | 10 | 6 | 4 (driest, 22 mm) |
| February | 7 | 8 | 5 | 9 | 8 | 10 | 6 | 4 |
| March | 8 | 8 | 6 | 9 | 7 | 9 | 8 | 5 |
| April | 10 | 9 | 8 | 9 | 6 | 6 | 9 | 7 |
| May | 8 | 6 | 8 | 6 | 5 | 3 | 12 (wettest, 161 mm) | 11 |
| June | 6 | 4 | 9 (wettest, 78 mm) | 3 | 4 | 2 | 10 | 13 |
| July | 4 (driest, 37 mm) | 2 (driest, 19 mm) | 6 | 2 (driest, 29 mm) | 3 | 1 (driest, 5 mm) | 7 | 13 (wettest, 121 mm) |
| August | 5 | 3 | 6 | 4 | 4 | 2 | 9 | 12 |
| September | 6 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 7 | 8 |
| October | 9 | 8 | 7 | 9 | 6 | 8 (wettest, 98 mm) | 7 | 7 |
| November | 9 (wettest, 114 mm) | 10 (wettest, 115 mm) | 6 | 10 (wettest, 152 mm) | 8 (wettest, 73 mm) | 9 | 8 | 6 |
| December | 8 | 8 | 6 | 10 | 7 | 11 | 6 | 5 |

Two months stand out for a wedding with an outdoor dinner. **June** has warm evenings everywhere and, in Rome, Naples, Bari and Palermo, rain on only two to four days. **September** is almost as dry there (four to six days) and three to five degrees cooler than August in Florence, Rome and Naples. October is lovely in the south and still mild in the centre, but the autumn rain is arriving: Rome averages 113 mm in October against 34 in June. Whatever the month, have a covered plan — [the rain plan](https://lensandvows.com/journal/rain-plan) works through one.

## What time is sunset?

Sunset on the 15th of each month of 2027, on the Italian clock (UTC+1 in winter, UTC+2 from 28 March to 31 October). Times move by only a minute or two from year to year; around the equinoxes they move by up to two minutes a day, so for a date far from the 15th, look up the exact day.

| Month | Florence | Rome | Venice | Naples | Bari | Palermo |

| December | 16:38 | 16:40 | 16:28 | 16:36 | 16:25 | 16:48 |

- **Bari has the earliest sunset of the six in every month** — it lies furthest east, on the same clock — 20:27 on 15 June, 16:25 on 15 December.
- **Venice has the latest summer sunsets** (21:01 on 15 June) and among the earliest winter ones (16:28 on 15 December), because it lies furthest north: the longest day of the six, 15 h 39 min in mid-June, and the shortest, 8 h 45 min in mid-December.
- **Palermo has the latest winter sunsets** (16:48 on 15 December, 17:10 on 15 January) and the shortest summer evenings.
- **The latest sunsets of 2027** come in the last ten days of June: about 21:00 in Florence and 21:03 in Venice, 20:49 in Rome.

## When is golden hour?

The evening golden hour here is the time when the centre of the sun is between 6° above and 4° below the horizon — low, warm, directional light, then a soft glow with the sky still bright. On the 15th of each month of 2027:

| Month (clock) | Florence | Rome | Venice | Naples | Bari | Palermo |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |

It begins 35 to 49 minutes before sunset and ends 16 to 23 minutes after it, and it is longest in the north and in winter: 70 minutes in Venice on 15 December, 51 in Palermo around the equinoxes. Read each window as two halves — the first, with the sun still up, is when photographers usually start portraits; the second fades quickly.

> **Your horizon is not the almanac’s.** These times assume a flat horizon. A hill, a wood, a building or a mountain to the west ends direct sunlight earlier: on Lake Como’s western shore and in the Dolomites’ valleys the sun can disappear well before the official sunset, while a terrace with open sea or hills to the west keeps it to the end. Ask your photographer how the light falls at your venue at your hour.

## When should the ceremony be, and when the portraits?

A reliable way to plan an outdoor day: start the ceremony about three to three and a half hours before sunset, which leaves time for congratulations, family photos and drinks, and puts a short portrait walk at the start of golden hour. In Florence in 2027 that gives:

| Month (Florence, 15th) | Sunset | Ceremony start, 3–3½ h before | Portraits from | Sun at 17:00 | Sun at 18:00 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| April | 19:58 | 16:30–17:00 | 19:20 | 31° | 20° |
| May | 20:33 | 17:00–17:30 | 19:52 | 36° | 26° |
| June | 20:59 | 17:30–18:00 | 20:15 | 40° | 29° |
| July | 20:55 | 17:30–18:00 | 20:12 | 40° | 29° |
| August | 20:19 | 16:45–17:15 | 19:40 | 35° | 24° |
| September | 19:26 | 16:00–16:30 | 18:48 | 25° | 15° |
| October | 18:32 | 15:00–15:30 | 17:53 | 15° | 5° |
| November | 16:50 | 13:15–13:45 | 16:06 | Set | Set |

For Rome, Naples, Bari or Palermo, shift the times by the difference in the sunset table. The last two columns are the sun’s height in Florence: in June and July it is still 40° up at 17:00 — bright, hot and squinty — which is why summer ceremonies in Italy start late and look for shade. From October the light is soft all afternoon. The [wedding-day timeline](https://lensandvows.com/journal/wedding-day-timeline) builds a whole day this way.

## What is each month like for a wedding?

- **January.** The coldest month: highs of 6.6 °C in Venice, 10.9 °C in Florence, 14.8 °C in Palermo. Venice has fog on 13 days on average — beautiful in photographs, harder for guests. In the Dolomites it is the driest month (22 mm at Dobbiaco) and the season for snow. Sunset around 16:50–17:10.
- **February.** Still winter in the north; Carnival fills Venice — in 2027 it ends on Shrove Tuesday, 9 February. Quiet cities and low light all afternoon suit a small city wedding or an elopement in Rome or Florence.
- **March.** Spring begins in the south. The clocks go forward on Sunday 28 March 2027, which is also Easter Sunday, so the evening jumps by an hour: Rome’s sunset goes from 18:30 on 27 March to 19:31 on 28 March.
- **April.** Green hills and the first garden weddings, but April is still showery in the centre: Florence averages 86 mm on about 10 days, Rome 80.5 mm on 9. The Amalfi Coast’s season opens around Easter; Rome is busy that week.
- **May.** One of the best months nearly everywhere: highs of 22–24 °C in Florence, Rome, Naples and Bari, and rain on 3–8 days. The exception is the lakes: May is Como’s wettest month (161 mm on 12 days). In the Dolomites most of the high season has not yet begun.
- **June.** Long, warm evenings: sunset at 20:27–21:01, golden hour ending as late as 21:24 in Venice. Rain on just 2–4 days in Rome, Naples, Bari and Palermo; Venice’s wettest month by total (78 mm), with summer storms. The Dolomites’ summer season starts.
- **July.** The hottest and driest month in the centre and south — 31.4 °C in Florence, 2 rain days in Rome, 5 mm in Palermo — and the wettest in the Dolomites (121 mm on 13 days, mostly afternoon storms). Plan the ceremony for the evening and keep guests in shade.
- **August.** As hot as July (31.5 °C in Florence) and the heart of Italy’s holidays: 15 August, Ferragosto, is a national holiday, and the coasts are full. Sunset is about 40 minutes earlier than in June, so golden hour falls during drinks rather than dinner.
- **September.** The second classic month: warm (25.9–26.7 °C in the centre and south), mostly dry, the sea still warm and the grape harvest under way. Evenings shorten fast — Florence’s sunset moves from 19:51 on 1 September to 18:57 on 1 October.
- **October.** Mild and golden, with the vines turning, but the autumn rain arrives: 104 mm in Florence, 113 in Rome, 136 in Naples. The south stays warm (22.9 °C in Palermo). The clocks go back on 31 October 2027: Florence’s sunset falls from 18:09 to 17:07.
- **November.** The wettest month in Florence, Rome, Naples and Bari, with sunset before 17:00 everywhere. Many coastal hotels and villas close until spring; city weddings and winter elopements carry on.
- **December.** The shortest days — 8 h 45 min of daylight in Venice on 15 December, 9 h 32 min in Palermo — and sunset between 16:25 and 16:48. Lunch-led weddings with portraits at 15:45–16:45 suit it; in the Dolomites, the snow season begins.

## Questions couples ask

### What is the best month to get married in Italy?

For most of Italy, May, June and September, with October in the south and in Tuscany: warm days, few rain days and long evenings. In Florence the average high is 23.7 °C in May and 26.7 °C in September, with rain on about 8 and 6 days (1971–2000 normals). For the Dolomites and the lakes, summer is the season.

### Is August a good month for a wedding in Italy?

It is the hottest month — 31.5 °C on average in Florence, 30.6 °C in Rome — and the heart of the holidays, with Ferragosto on 15 August. It is also one of the driest. If you choose it, hold the ceremony late, about three hours before sunset (around 17:00 in Florence), and plan shade and water for guests.

### What time is sunset in Tuscany in June?

In Florence the sun sets at 20:59 on 15 June 2027, and at about 21:00 in the last ten days of June, the latest of the year. Evening golden hour that day runs from 20:15 to 21:20.

### When does it rain most in Italy?

In the centre and south, in autumn: November is the wettest month in Florence (114 mm), Rome (115 mm), Naples (152 mm) and Bari (73 mm), and October in Palermo (98 mm). In the north it is different: Como’s wettest month is May, Venice’s June, and the Dolomites’ July.

### When is the best time to get married on Lake Como or in the Dolomites?

Lake Como: May, June and September, when the gardens and villas are open and the heat is moderate; expect some rain in any warm month. The Dolomites: June to September, when lifts and mountain huts are open and highs of 17–22 °C at Dobbiaco — but July is also the wettest month, so plan for morning ceremonies.

### When do the clocks change in Italy in 2027?

They go forward one hour on Sunday 28 March 2027 — also Easter Sunday — and back one hour on Sunday 31 October 2027, at 01:00 UTC, as everywhere in the EU. Sunset in Florence jumps from 18:35 to 19:37 in March and falls from 18:09 to 17:07 in October.
