Piedmont — the name means “at the foot of the mountains” — fills Italy’s north-west, with the Alps around it on three sides. South of Turin the land folds into the Langhe, the Roero and the Monferrato: steep hills covered in vineyards, with villages, castles and bell towers along the crests. Their vineyard landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014. This is the home of Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape, and of Alba, the town of the white truffle.

Most weddings here gather around a wine estate, a castle or an old farmhouse among the vines — a cascina — with dinner on a terrace above the rows of Nebbiolo. Turin, the old capital of the House of Savoy, whose royal residences are a World Heritage site too, makes for a city wedding: the comune marries couples in several historic buildings, and the arcades and the banks of the Po are made for portraits. In the north, Orta San Giulio looks across Lake Orta to the island of San Giulio.

## When to marry in Piedmont

- **Best:** June, September
- **Good with planning:** May, July, August, October

June and September are the classic months: warm days and cool evenings in the hills. May is green but wet — at Turin’s airport station it is the wettest month of the year — while the wine hills to the south get less rain. July and August are hot on the plain and a little fresher on the hilltops; around mid-August, at Ferragosto, much of Italy is on holiday. October brings the Nebbiolo harvest and the first white truffles, with cooler days and fog in the valleys in the morning.

- **Spring:** Vines in new leaf, meadows in flower and snow still on the Alps behind the hills. Rain is frequent in April and May — plan a covered place, and a second idea for the portraits.
- **Summer:** Long, warm days and late sunsets: on 21 June the sun sets at about a quarter past nine in Alba. The hilltops are a little fresher than Turin and the plain; ceremonies move to the end of the afternoon.
- **Harvest and autumn:** The harvest runs from September into October, Nebbiolo last of all; then the vines turn yellow and red, and Alba’s white-truffle fair runs from October into early December. The valleys often wake in fog while the hilltop villages sit in the sun above it.

## Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

- **Wine estates and cascine:** Wineries and old farmhouses among the vines, many with rooms for the guests: a ceremony in the garden or between the rows, dinner on a terrace facing the hills.
- **Castles and hilltop villages:** Medieval castles above the vineyards, some of them wine museums that open their halls and terraces to weddings, and villages such as La Morra, Barolo and Neive for portraits in lanes of stone and brick.
- **Turin’s historic halls:** Baroque palaces, royal residences and wide squares lined with arcades: the city holds civil weddings in several historic buildings, and some of the royal residences around it host ceremonies and receptions.
- **Lake Orta:** A small, quiet lake under the mountains: Orta San Giulio’s square on the water, the island of San Giulio a few minutes away by boat, villas with gardens down to the shore, and the chapels of the Sacro Monte in the woods above the town — another World Heritage site.

## How the light falls

In the Langhe the light comes in low across rows of vines that follow the shape of every hill, and on clear days the Alps line the horizon in white. Autumn mornings often begin in fog, with the hilltop villages floating above it, and at the end of the day the brick of the castles turns gold. Turin’s arcades give soft, even light in any weather; at Orta the sun goes down behind the hills across the lake, beyond the island.

## Getting there

Fly into Turin, whose airport is 16 km from the city, or into Milan. Alba lies about 50 km south-east of Turin, and Cuneo’s small airport is 47 km from it; a suburban train line runs from Turin’s airport through the city to Bra and Alba. Beyond the towns, plan on a car — or a driver for the guests. Lake Orta is 87 km from Milan, and Stresa and the Borromean Islands, on Lake Maggiore’s Piedmont shore, are on our Italian lakes page.
