Sorrento, a town of about 14,800 people on the Sorrentine Peninsula, looks north over the Bay of Naples, with views of Naples, Vesuvius and Capri. It has two small harbours below the cliffs — Marina Piccola for the hydrofoils, Marina Grande for the fishing boats — and it is the last stop of the old Circumvesuviana railway from Naples, Herculaneum and Pompeii.

The comune says it receives a high number of requests for civil weddings every year from couples of many nationalities, and it offers three of its finest places for them: a cloister, a museum and a villa with a citrus grove. Unlike Positano or Ravello, Sorrento is reached by train, and boats to Capri, Positano and Naples leave from the harbour below the town.

## Where couples marry in Sorrento

- **The Cloister of San Francesco:** Built by the Franciscans in the 14th century on the remains of a 7th-century monastery, reworked in the 15th and restored in the early 20th: four porticoes of tufa arches, with pieces taken from pagan temples, round a garden. It is the comune’s best-known wedding place; ceremonies are led by the mayor or a registrar.
- **Museo Correale di Terranova:** A museum laid out like an old noble residence, with its period furniture, owned by the comune and used for weddings. It is the only one of the three where you can marry on a Sunday.
- **Villa Fiorentino:** A villa on Corso Italia finished in 1936 and left to the town by the Fiorentino-Cuomo couple, now the home of the Fondazione Sorrento. Its park and citrus grove, about 6,000 m², take civil ceremonies in the middle of town; ask the foundation directly.
- **Hotels and terraces over the bay:** Dinners, and symbolic ceremonies, are held in hotels and on terraces along the cliffs. A symbolic ceremony in the comune’s own places costs 10% less than the civil fee for the same day and time, with no registrar and no papers.

## Where to take your portraits

- **Under the cloister’s arches:** Round tufa arches on two sides, interlaced Arab-style arches on the other two, a garden in the middle: soft shade for portraits straight after the ceremony, when the midday light outside is hard.
- **The Vallone dei Mulini:** A gorge in the middle of town, named after the mill that once ground grain at its bottom. In 1866 the narrow bridge that crossed it was replaced by a square, filling part of the gorge; today you look down into it from above.
- **Marina Grande:** The small fishermen’s harbour below the old town, the other side of the cliffs from the hydrofoils. It has its own limited-traffic zone, so walk down — and plan the climb back for guests in heels.
- **The bay at sunset:** From the cliff-top terraces the bay opens out towards Naples and Vesuvius. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 20:35, with golden light from 19:54 to 20:55; in mid-September at 19:12.

## When to marry in Sorrento

For the weather we use Capri’s official station (269 m, WMO normals 1961–1990), as for the whole coast: average highs of 21.9 °C in May, 25.9 °C in June, 28.9 °C in July and 26.4 °C in September. June is the driest month (16 mm of rain), while October brings 70 mm. Sunset and golden-hour times are NOAA solar-equation figures for Piazza Tasso. The comune’s page lists the same fees for the low season, from 15 November to 15 March.

Amalfi Coast & Capri, month by month:
- **Best:** May, June, September
- **Good with planning:** April, July, August, October

## Good to know before the day

- **Getting there:** Sorrento is the southern terminus of the former Circumvesuviana line, which runs through Vico Equense, Pompeii and Herculaneum to Naples. Hydrofoils from Marina Piccola link it with Naples, Capri, Ischia and Positano; check each operator’s timetable for the last boat.
- **The ZTL:** In 2025 the centre’s limited-traffic zone ran from 1 April to 25 October, from 19:30 to 4:00, and in the mornings too on public holidays — just when guests head to dinner. The comune issues temporary ZTL permits: ask for one for the wedding car.
- **Drones:** Anywhere in Italy a drone must not fly over gatherings of people, which rules out the cloister during the ceremony and the busy centre. The comune publishes no rules of its own on photo shoots: for anything beyond portraits on a walk, ask it first.
- **The legal route:** Each foreign partner brings a valid passport and a nulla osta from their consulate or embassy in Italy, its signature legalised at the prefecture unless your country is in the 1961 Hague Convention; countries of the 1980 Munich Convention send a certificate of capacity to marry. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.

## Questions about marrying in Sorrento

### How much does a civil wedding in Sorrento cost?

For couples who don’t live in Sorrento, the council’s fees of March 2025 are €750 on weekday mornings and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, €1,000 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons, and €1,200 on Saturdays — or on Sundays, at the Museo Correale only. Venue and dinner costs are separate.

### Where can we have a civil wedding in Sorrento?

In the Cloister of San Francesco, the Museo Correale di Terranova or the park of Villa Fiorentino. Write to the registry office (statocivile@comune.sorrento.na.it) for the cloister; the museum and the Fondazione Sorrento take enquiries for their own places.

### Can we have a symbolic ceremony in the cloister?

Yes: the comune lets its places for symbolic weddings at 10% less than the civil fee for the same day and hour, without a registrar or documents. Many couples marry legally at home and hold the ceremony here.

### Is Sorrento a good base for photos on the Amalfi Coast and Capri?

Yes: hydrofoils from Marina Piccola go to Capri and Positano, and the train goes to Naples and Pompeii. For a portrait session elsewhere, plan around the last boat back, and around the sea, which can cancel crossings.

### What is the weather like for a June wedding in Sorrento?

Warm and usually dry: Capri’s station averages 25.9 °C highs in June and only 16 mm of rain, the driest month. The sun sets at about 20:35 in mid-June, so an evening ceremony leaves golden light for portraits until nearly 21:00.
