# Ravello

> Ravello looks down on the Amalfi Coast from its ridge, 350 metres up: gardens on the edge of the drop, a cathedral square and a village you cross mostly on foot.

Ravello is the Amalfi Coast seen from above. The village sits about 350 metres over the sea, with old villas and gardens built out to the edge of the slope and the coast and its towns laid out below. Music runs through it: Wagner visited Villa Rufolo in 1880 and found there an idea for the staging of Parsifal, and the Ravello Festival has been held since 1953 — in 2026 from 4 July to 5 September, on the belvedere of Villa Rufolo.

The famous names need a closer look before you plan. Villa Rufolo hosts no wedding ceremonies. Villa Cimbrone, now a hotel whose gardens open to the public every day, hosts weddings, but not Catholic or civil ones. Civil weddings take place at the town hall or in the small garden beside it, church weddings at the Duomo. So be ready to plan the day in two parts — the ceremony in one place, dinner in another — with a walk through the village in between.

## Where couples marry in Ravello

- **The town hall, Palazzo Tolla:** Ravello’s civil weddings are celebrated on every day of the week in the town hall’s reception room. The building was a fortified house of the 11th to 13th centuries; it has been the town hall since 1932.
- **Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte:** The comune’s other place for civil weddings: a small, shaded public garden beside the town hall, looking down over Torello to Minori and Maiori in the distance.
- **The Duomo:** Founded in 1086, with bronze doors made by Barisano da Trani in 1179, on Piazza Vescovado in the middle of the village. For a church wedding here, contact the parish — and your own — months ahead.
- **Villa Cimbrone:** The villa’s hotel hosts weddings in its gardens and rooms: Protestant, Waldensian (with civil effect), Jewish and other rites, and symbolic ceremonies — not Catholic or civil ones.
- **Hotel terraces and villas for events:** Receptions are held on hotel terraces and in villas along the ridge. Ask each one how guests get there: some can be reached only on foot.

## Where to take your portraits

- **The Terrace of Infinity:** The end of Villa Cimbrone’s gardens: a balustrade lined with marble statues above the drop. The gardens are open to visitors every day, so the quiet times are opening and closing; ask the villa before you plan a session.
- **Piazza Vescovado:** The village’s main square, with the front of the Duomo and its bronze doors. It is quietest first thing in the morning.
- **The garden by the town hall:** Free to enter and steps from a civil ceremony: a lawn under the trees, with the coast and, far off, Minori and Maiori.
- **The walk to Villa Cimbrone:** Ten minutes on foot from Piazza Vescovado, through lanes no car can use: walls, steps and archways, for portraits on the move.

## When to marry in Ravello

Ravello sits higher than the beach towns, and Capri’s station, at 269 m, gives an official record at a similar height (WMO normals 1961–1990). Average lows there are 13.8 °C in May and 14.7 °C in October, and highs 17.6 °C in April and 21.7 °C in October: spring and autumn evenings outdoors need a wrap. In summer the festival fills the village on concert nights — in 2026 there was even a dawn concert, on 11 August at 5:15.

Amalfi Coast & Capri, month by month:
- **Best:** May, June, September
- **Good with planning:** April, July, August, October

## Good to know before the day

- **The road up:** Ravello is reached by a narrow, winding road that climbs from the coast. In 2024 the longest bus the province allowed on it was 9.27 metres, and even that could not take one bend in a single manoeuvre: plan cars and minibuses for guests, not coaches.
- **On foot in the village:** Villa Cimbrone can’t be reached by car: it is about ten minutes on foot from Piazza Vescovado, and the hotel carries luggage if you tell it when you are arriving.
- **The coast road:** Below Ravello, the SS163 had an odd–even number-plate rule from 10:00 to 18:00 in 2026: at weekends and on holidays in June, July and October, every day in August and September. Taxis and NCC cars (hire with a driver) were exempt.
- **An interpreter:** If either of you doesn’t speak Italian perfectly, you need an interpreter over 18, both when you sign the declaration and at the ceremony. Ravello’s office does not provide one.
- **The legal route:** Each of you brings a nulla osta, translated and legalised as needed, and you sign a declaration at the comune before the wedding. Our guide to getting married in Italy has the details.

## Questions about marrying in Ravello

### Can we get married at Villa Rufolo?

No. Villa Rufolo states that it hosts no wedding ceremonies or anything similar, and it has no restaurant. Its gardens are a visit; in summer its belvedere is the festival’s stage.

### Can we have a legal wedding at Villa Cimbrone?

Not a Catholic or a civil one. The hotel hosts Protestant, Waldensian (with civil effect), Jewish and other rites, and symbolic ceremonies. For a civil wedding, the usual answer is the town hall or its garden first, then the celebration at the villa.

### Where do civil weddings take place in Ravello?

In the reception room of the town hall, Palazzo Tolla, or in the Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte next door, on any day of the week. Ask the comune for your date early: the garden is small and the season short.

### Is Ravello busy in summer?

On festival nights, yes: in 2026 the Ravello Festival ran from 4 July to 5 September, with most concerts at Villa Rufolo. Check the programme before you fix the date, and plan guests’ cars and parking with it in mind.

### Can guests drive to Villa Cimbrone?

No. The villa is reached on foot, about ten minutes from Piazza Vescovado; the hotel carries luggage if you tell it when you arrive. Warn guests in heels and anyone who finds steps hard.
