# Positano

> Positano is a town of stairs: a wedding here moves on foot and by boat, from the town hall terrace at the top to the church by the beach.

Positano rises from the sea to over 400 metres in a very short distance, and staircases do the work of streets: they link the upper districts with the bottom of the town, and most of its beaches can be reached only on foot or by boat. At the bottom, just above Spiaggia Grande, stands the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, its dome covered in yellow, green and blue majolica.

That shapes the day more than any venue does. Every move is a walk or a boat ride, so keep the places close together, warn guests about the steps and give the timeline room. In return, the day looks like the town: vows with the sea below, a walk down through the lanes, dinner on a terrace with Positano lit up around you.

## Where couples marry in Positano

- **The town hall terrace:** Positano’s civil weddings take place on the terrace of the Municipio, high in the town, looking over Fornillo. If the weather turns, the ceremony moves into the hall inside, lined with majolica and hung with paintings. The comune celebrates weddings from Monday to Saturday.
- **Santa Maria Assunta:** The parish church just above the main beach is where Positano’s Catholic weddings are normally held. The parish celebrates none there from 11 to 16 June or from 5 to 17 August, and it does not allow weddings in private chapels.
- **The smaller churches:** Santa Margherita by Fornillo beach, San Giacomo in the Liparlati quarter and the Chiesa Nuova in the upper town are among Positano’s small churches. Under the parish’s rules, a wedding outside the parish church needs written permission.
- **Hotel and villa terraces:** Receptions, and most symbolic ceremonies, happen on the terraces of hotels and villas on the cliff. Flat ground is scarce: ask how many guests a terrace really seats, and how many steps lie between it and the road.

## Where to take your portraits

- **Spiaggia Grande at sunrise:** The beach, the boats, the tiled dome and the houses stacked behind: the view everyone knows. In summer the beach and the lanes fill from mid-morning, so this one belongs to the first hour of the day.
- **Fornillo:** The second beach, smaller than Spiaggia Grande, below the town hall terrace: the natural first stop after a civil ceremony, with the little church of Santa Margherita close by.
- **From the water:** Only from a boat a little way out do you see the whole town in one frame. Plan it for the late afternoon, and ask the boatman how close to the shore he can take you.
- **Nocelle:** High above the town at the end of the Path of the Gods, about 1,500 steps above the Arienzo district. For couples who like to walk: the coast spread out below you, in the softer light at the end of the day.

## When to marry in Positano

For the weather we use Capri’s official station (269 m, WMO normals 1961–1990), as for the whole coast: average highs of 21.9 °C in May and 26.4 °C in September, with 34 and 48 mm of rain — warm, without the full heat of midsummer. Two local calendars matter as much as the weather: the parish church’s closed weeks in June and August, and the coast road’s plate rule, which in 2026 applied every day in August and September.

Amalfi Coast & Capri, month by month:
- **Best:** May, June, September
- **Good with planning:** April, July, August, October

## Good to know before the day

- **Boats:** In 2026 Travelmar ran boats all year round from Positano to Amalfi (25 minutes) and Salerno (70 minutes). The last departure from Positano was at 18:30, and the company warns that rough seas can delay sailings: anyone leaving after dinner goes home by road.
- **The coast road:** In 2026, from 10:00 to 18:00, odd and even number plates took turns on the SS163 from Vietri sul Mare to Positano: every day in Holy Week, from 24 April to 2 May and in August and September; at weekends and on holidays in June, July and October. Taxis and NCC cars (hire with a driver) are exempt.
- **Steps and shade:** Getting ready, the ceremony and dinner may be minutes apart and still hundreds of steps apart: walk the route before the day and warn older guests. The narrow stairways between the houses are also your shade for portraits at a summer midday.
- **Photo permits and drones:** Positano adopted rules for photo and video shoots in 2017 — requests 30 days ahead, the town’s authorisation for weddings, no drones except in special cases, as reported then. We could not confirm today’s version: ask the comune. Anywhere in Italy, a drone must not fly over gatherings of people.
- **The legal route:** Two foreign citizens marry civilly here with each one’s nulla osta and a declaration signed at the comune a few days before; a Catholic wedding adds the Church’s own file. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.

## Questions about marrying in Positano

### Can we have a civil wedding in Positano?

Yes: the comune celebrates them on the town hall terrace above Fornillo, or in its majolica hall if the weather turns, from Monday to Saturday. Ask for its document list when you ask for your date.

### Can we get married in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta?

Yes — it is the parish church, where Positano’s weddings are normally held — except from 11 to 16 June and from 5 to 17 August. The Church needs its own papers too, so start with your home parish months ahead.

### How do guests get to Positano and home again?

By road on the SS163, or by boat from Amalfi, Salerno and other towns. Boats stop early — in 2026 the last one left Positano at 18:30 — so book taxis or NCC drivers for the evening; they are also exempt from the summer plate rule.

### Do we need a permit for wedding photos in Positano?

Portraits on a walk through town are one thing; an organised shoot is another. Positano’s 2017 rules, as reported then, asked for requests 30 days ahead and the town’s authorisation for weddings, and banned drones. We could not confirm the current version: email the comune before you plan.
