Aix was the capital of Provence, and its streets show it: the Cours Mirabeau, laid out from 1649, the Mazarin quarter, planned from 1646, and squares of 17th- and 18th-century mansions with their fountains — the Fontaine Moussue, of 1666, still runs with warm water from the town’s thermal springs. East of town rises the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, the limestone ridge Cézanne painted again and again.

Here the day follows the heat. The town hall marries couples from Thursday to Saturday, and the cathedral on Saturday afternoons; then the guests drive out to a bastide or a wine estate, for a ceremony in the garden as the heat eases and dinner under the trees. In midsummer the sun sets at about 21:20, and July’s afternoons average 31 °C.

## Wedding photographers in Aix-en-Provence

They shoot everywhere in Provence — in Aix-en-Provence too. Their whole weddings are on their pages.

## Where couples marry in Aix-en-Provence

- **The Hôtel de Ville:** The town hall, rebuilt in the 17th century beside the clock tower, holds weddings from Thursday to Saturday at an hour the registrar sets. Files are handed in by appointment — appointments for the next year’s weddings open in September — and incomplete ones are refused. The ceremony lasts at most 20 minutes, with two to four adult witnesses.
- **Saint-Sauveur Cathedral:** The cathedral, whose cloister dates from the late 12th century, celebrates weddings on Saturdays at 15:00 and 16:30; the parish also marries couples at Notre-Dame de la Seds. Contact it a year ahead if you can: preparation takes at least six months, and the civil wedding must already have taken place.
- **Bastides and wine estates:** Receptions move out to country houses with gardens and vines. The Château de la Gaude is an 18th-century bastide with a chapel and listed formal gardens among 30 ha of vines; the Château de Fonscolombe, 20 minutes away at Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, an 18th-century estate listed as a historic monument; and Château La Coste, nearby, a wine estate that hosts wedding ceremonies.
- **Cézanne’s terraces:** The town hires out terraces at its two Cézanne sites for private events: up to 300 people at the Jas de Bouffan, the painter’s family estate, and up to 100 at the Atelier des Lauves, his studio. Weddings are not named on the list, so ask.

## Where to take your portraits

- **The Cours Mirabeau and its fountains:** From the Rotonde — a fountain of 1860, 12 m high, crowned by Justice, Agriculture and the Fine Arts — past the Neuf Canons (1651), once a trough for sheep on their way to the summer pastures, and the mossy Fontaine Moussue. A textile and flea market takes the Cours on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings; come on another day.
- **Place d’Albertas and the Mazarin quarter:** Place d’Albertas, built in 1735–41, is a small cobbled square of mansions round a fountain added in 1912. South of the Cours, the Mazarin quarter’s straight streets meet at the Fontaine des Quatre-Dauphins, of 1667.
- **The Jardin des Peintres, in the evening:** The old painters’ ground, chemin de la Marguerite, a 15-minute walk from Cézanne’s studio: free, open all year, with a wide view of the Sainte-Victoire and nine enamel plaques of his paintings of it. The mountain lies east, so the evening sun falls on its face.
- **The Pavillon de Vendôme’s roses:** The town itself says the roses in the garden of the Pavillon de Vendôme are the backdrop to many local couples’ wedding photos. Its opening hours change with the month; check them before you plan the session.
- **The lakes below the Sainte-Victoire:** The Bimont dam, 87 m high, built in 1946–52, and the older Zola dam, built in 1850–54 by the novelist’s father, François Zola, with the mountain above the water. They lie in the massif, so the summer access rules apply.

## When to marry in Aix-en-Provence

Météo-France’s 1991–2020 normals for the Aix-en-Provence station give average highs of 23.4 °C in May, 27.9 °C in June, 31.0 °C in July, 30.8 °C in August and 25.9 °C in September, and 21 days above 30 °C in an average July. Summer is nearly dry — 15.9 mm in July, on two days — while September, the wettest of the warm months, brings 88.2 mm in a few heavy downpours. The mistral, the cold north wind, blows most often in winter and spring. The Festival d’Aix, the opera festival, runs from 1 to 20 July 2027; book rooms early.

Provence, month by month:
- **Best:** May, June, September
- **Good with planning:** April, July, August, October

## Good to know before the day

- **Getting there and the old town:** The TGV station is 15 km from the centre, 2 h 55 from Paris, with shuttles every 30 minutes; Marseille Provence airport is 25 km away, about 30 minutes by the A2 bus. The old town is a pedestrian zone where the town decides case by case on any other vehicle, a wedding car included, and the market squares close to cars on market days.
- **The summer fire rules:** From 1 June to 30 September the préfecture decides each day, from 18:00, whether the massifs — the Sainte-Victoire among them — are open the next day: green, open; red, closed. Check risque-prevention-incendie.fr/13 the evening before and keep a portrait spot in town. Events and professional film shoots inside a massif must be declared two months ahead.
- **Photo and drone permissions:** At Cézanne’s studio and the Jas de Bouffan, professional photography, tripods, lighting and drones need prior permission. The official drone map marks the whole built-up town, the Jardin des Peintres included, as closed to open-category drones in public space; at the Bimont and Zola lakes, drones over 900 g need prior notice.
- **The legal route:** A civil wedding needs one of you, or a parent, to live in Aix, with at least a month’s continuous residence when the banns go up for their 10 days; a church wedding comes only after it. Most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at a bastide.

## Questions about marrying in Aix-en-Provence

### Can we marry at the Hôtel de Ville in Aix?

Only if one of you, or a parent, lives in Aix. Weddings are held from Thursday to Saturday, appointments for the next year open in September, and an approved interpreter is required if either of you does not speak French. Rice, confetti and firecrackers are banned in the wedding room.

### Is July too hot for a wedding in Aix?

It is hot: highs average 31.0 °C in July and 30.8 °C in August, with about 20 days a month above 30 °C (Météo-France). Hold the ceremony late in the day — on 15 July 2027 golden hour runs from 20:35 to 21:38 — or choose June or September.

### Can we have photos on the Sainte-Victoire in summer?

Only on days when the massif is open. From 1 June to 30 September the préfecture announces each evening, from 18:00, whether access is allowed the next day, and on red days it is closed. The Jardin des Peintres, in town, gives you the mountain whatever the colour.

### When is the Festival d’Aix in 2027?

From 1 to 20 July 2027. It is the town’s great summer event, so book rooms early if your date falls in those weeks — and expect the old town to be busy in the evenings.

### Do we need a permit for photos in the streets of Aix?

The town’s film office charges a fee for advertising and photo shoots in public space and asks for 15 days’ notice; it does not say whether a wedding session counts, so your photographer should ask. Cézanne’s studio and the Jas de Bouffan need their own permission for professional photos.
