Toulouse, about 515,000 people on the Garonne, takes its nickname, la Ville rose, from its local terracotta brick. It has been run from the Capitole for more than eight centuries, and the building’s name comes from the capitouls, the magistrates who governed the city before the Revolution. The façade is 128 metres long, with eight pink marble columns for the eight capitouls. Toulouse has two UNESCO sites within reach of a wedding day: the Basilica of Saint-Sernin and the Canal du Midi.

What sets Toulouse apart for a couple is the Salle des Illustres, the room on the first floor of the Capitole where the city holds its official ceremonies and marries couples, often on Saturdays. Afterwards a short walk through brick streets leads to the river, where the evening crowd sits along the quays of the Daurade. Without a home here, couples from abroad usually marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on an estate in the country around the city.

## Where couples marry in Toulouse

- **The Salle des Illustres:** A gallery 60 metres long and 9 wide, on the first floor of the Hôtel de Ville on Place du Capitole, decided on in 1892 after the old hall was destroyed. Painters including Henri Martin, Jean-Paul Laurens and Paul Gervais covered it with monumental scenes of the city’s history, and it remains in use for receptions and civil weddings. The tourist office says Saturdays are frequent, and that visitors may be kept out while one is on.
- **A church wedding:** It can only follow the civil one. Saint-Sernin was built from the 11th to the 13th century. The Jacobins, whose choir vault spreads 22 ribs from a single column about 28 metres high, is run as a place to visit, with concerts and exhibitions in its cloister. We found no published wedding rules for either: ask the basilica’s parish and the convent well ahead.
- **A symbolic ceremony outside the city:** Couples without a home in Toulouse hold the ceremony on a private estate or at a château in the countryside around it, with the Capitole and the river kept for portraits. Allow for the drive back into town for those, or plan them for a day either side of the wedding.

## Where to take your portraits

- **Place du Capitole:** The long pink-and-white façade over a big open square, with the 12-branch Occitan cross, about 18 metres across, set into the paving by Raymond Moretti in 1995. Inside the Capitole, the Cour Henri-IV is free to enter while the Hôtel de Ville is open.
- **The Daurade quays and the Pont-Neuf:** Wide quays where the city’s young people gather as the day ends. The seven-arched Pont-Neuf, begun in 1544 and finished in 1632, is the oldest bridge on the Garonne. The sun sets across the river from here: on 15 June 2027 at 21:37, with golden light from 20:54 to 21:59 (NOAA’s solar equations); on 15 September at 20:05. Expect company.
- **La Grave and the Prairie des Filtres:** The copper-covered dome of the old Hôpital de la Grave stands over the left bank, the one you see from the Daurade, and the Hôtel-Dieu’s façade meets the water beside it. The Prairie des Filtres, a public garden on the left bank, looks back at the Pont-Neuf.
- **The Jacobins’ cloister:** The church is free; a ticket covers the cloister with its garden, the refectory and the chapter house, a calm patch in the old centre. We found no published rules for photographers, so ask the convent before planning a session.
- **The Canal du Midi:** A UNESCO site since 1996, its towpath lined with plane trees. The Ponts Jumeaux, where the Canal du Midi meets the Canal de Brienne and the Canal Latéral, have a large marble bas-relief between the bridges. Boat companies run one- or two-hour trips through the locks.

## When to marry in Toulouse

At Météo-France’s Toulouse-Blagnac station (1991–2020 normals) average highs are 21.4 °C in May, 25.7 °C in June and 24.8 °C in September. May is the wettest month of the year, 74 mm on about ten days; June has seven rainy days and September between six and seven, with only 46 mm. July and August reach 28 °C, with 30 °C or more on about 11 days each. The autan, a wind from the south-east nicknamed “the wind that drives you mad”, is the local weather to watch: hold on to veils and check the forecast before any arch outdoors.

Occitanie & Languedoc, month by month:
- **Best:** May, June, September
- **Good with planning:** April, July, August, October

## Good to know before the day

- **Getting there:** From Toulouse-Blagnac, the airport shuttle runs every 20 minutes to the bus station, every day except 1 May, in 20 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Toulouse-Matabiau station is linked to the métro, with direct trains to Paris, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Marseille and Lyon. Carcassonne is 41 minutes by train.
- **The city’s wedding charter:** Toulouse publishes a Charte des mariages for ceremonies at the Capitole and a list of the papers for the file. Ask the service for both (mariage@mairie-toulouse.fr) and read them before you plan the arrival of cars, music or a photographer in the room. If something goes wrong on the day, the room’s own line is 05 61 22 34 12.
- **Drones:** French rules ban flights at night, over gatherings of people and over public space in a built-up area, so the Capitole, the quays and the canal in town are out unless a photographer has gone through the special procedure. Blagnac airport is close to the north-west: check the official restriction map before planning any flight.
- **The legal route:** A civil wedding needs one of you, or a parent, to have a home or at least a month’s continuous residence in Toulouse when the banns go up for their 10 days; being born there isn’t enough. A church wedding may only follow it. Our guide to getting married in France sets out the steps, and the city’s service confirms its own deadlines.

## Questions about marrying in Toulouse

### Can we get married in the Salle des Illustres?

Yes, if you can marry in Toulouse at all: the city’s charter puts civil ceremonies in the Salle des Illustres, and the room is used for weddings, often on Saturdays. You need a home here, or a parent’s, with at least a month’s continuous residence when the banns are published.

### We live abroad. Can we still marry at the Capitole?

Not without that tie: a birthplace in the city isn’t enough, and French law asks for a home or real residence. Couples from abroad marry at home and take their portraits at the Capitole and on the river. The square and the Cour Henri-IV are free to enter, but the Salle des Illustres can close for ceremonies.

### Where do we take portraits at sunset?

The Daurade quays and the Pont-Neuf: the sun goes down across the Garonne, on the side of La Grave’s dome, at 21:37 on 15 June 2027 and 20:05 on 15 September. Many people come for it, so a photographer may prefer the far bank or the Prairie des Filtres.

### When is the best time to marry in Toulouse?

June and September: average highs of about 25 °C and rain on six or seven days a month at Blagnac. May is the wettest month of the year, and July and August bring about 11 days of 30 °C or more each.
