Montpellier, about 310,000 people, is a university city of pale stone. The Écusson, the old centre named for its shield shape, is a tangle of lanes between the Place de la Comédie and the Peyrou, a royal promenade on a hill with an arch, a water tower and an aqueduct. France’s oldest botanical garden is here, founded in 1593 to study medicinal plants; so is Saint-Pierre, the largest church of the old Languedoc-Roussillon, with its huge two-pillared porch.

For a couple with a home here, the day has an unusual shape. The city marries in two rooms: one in the Domaine de Grammont, out by the Zénith, the other at the Hôtel de Ville. A château hired for the reception can be on the same long avenue as Grammont, so guests barely move; the old town and its portraits are a short drive back in. Couples from abroad usually hold a symbolic ceremony in one of the old estates and keep the evening for the Peyrou.

## Where couples marry in Montpellier

- **The Domaine de Grammont:** A former priory and wine estate on the city’s east side, whose château is the annex of the mairie for civil weddings. From the main entrance behind the Zénith you cross the park to the room, and the Zénith’s car park is the one to use. By public transport: tram 1 to Odysseum, then bus 52 to Grammont. The city’s flyer gives Tuesday to Saturday as ceremony days.
- **The Salle Harvey-Milk at the Hôtel de Ville:** On Place Georges-Frêche, facing the building, take the outside stairs on the right, or the lift at their foot, then walk along the building through the gates to the wooden forecourt and the ceremony room. Trams 1 and 3 stop at Moularès - Hôtel de Ville, tram 4 at Georges Frêche - Hôtel de Ville, and there is a car park on avenue Germaine-Tillion.
- **The Château de Flaugergues:** A 17th-century folie with a vineyard dating back to 1696, at 1744 avenue Albert-Einstein, the same avenue as Grammont. Its own wedding page offers the whole estate privately, indoors and out: a 4-hectare park with a French garden, a bamboo grove and an olive avenue, terrace and reception rooms, and 200 free parking spaces. It suggests the park for the ceremony and the cocktail.
- **The Château de la Mogère:** La Mogère, an 18th-century Montpellier folie, hires out rooms for receptions and shows its salons, park and gardens on guided tours. Its page does not name weddings, so ask (contact@lamogere.fr), and ask what the park allows for a ceremony.
- **A church wedding:** It can only follow the civil one. Saint-Pierre’s porch stands on two massive round pillars from the 14th century, and the old monastery beside it is now the Faculty of Medicine. We found no published rules from the parish or the diocese: ask the parish well ahead whether it takes couples from outside.

## Where to take your portraits

- **The Peyrou and its water tower:** A royal square of 4.59 hectares on a height beside the old town, begun in 1689, with an equestrian Louis XIV and at the far, western end the hexagonal, columned water tower of the 1760s. It looks out towards the Cévennes and the Pyrenees, and the end of the day is the time to come: on 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 21:28, with golden light from 20:44 to 21:49 (NOAA’s solar equations); on 15 September at 19:56. There is a flea market on Sunday mornings.
- **The arch and the aqueduct:** The Arc de Triomphe of 1691, built where the old city gate stood, closes the Peyrou on the town side. Beyond the water tower Henri Pitot’s aqueduct runs for about 14 km and ends in the Arceaux, two tiers of arches up to 21.5 metres high, with views towards the Pic Saint-Loup.
- **The Place de la Comédie:** “L’Œuf”, a pedestrian square since 1985, with the Opéra at one end and the Three Graces fountain by Étienne Dantoine, placed there in the late 1790s. It fills up through the day, so go early, or use the façades and the fountain from close up.
- **The Jardin des Plantes:** Founded in 1593 and recognised as a Remarkable Garden in 2022, 4.6 hectares of old trees and glasshouses, free to enter. It opens only at midday, Tuesday to Sunday, until 20:00 from June to September and until 18:00 from October to May, so plan the session after lunch; ask the garden first about a shoot.

## When to marry in Montpellier

At Météo-France’s Montpellier-Aéroport station (1991–2020 normals) average highs are 22.6 °C in May, 26.9 °C in June and 25.2 °C in September, with rain on three or four days in June and about five in May and September. July is the driest month, 17 mm on two or three days, and reaches 29.5 °C, with 30 °C or more on about 14 days. Autumn is when the rain falls hard: September has 87 mm on four or five days and October 95 mm on six, so a September couple needs a roof ready. The station is at the airport, 8 km out of the city.

Occitanie & Languedoc, month by month:
- **Best:** May, June, September
- **Good with planning:** April, July, August, October

## Good to know before the day

- **Getting there:** Saint-Roch station, in the centre, is a 5-minute walk from the Comédie and served by trams 1, 2, 3 and 4; high-speed trains reach Paris in about three and a half hours and Barcelona in under three. From Montpellier Méditerranée airport, take Orange bus line 620 to Place de l’Europe, then tram 1 to the centre, buying the bus ticket from the driver.
- **On the day:** The city’s wedding rules, which you both sign, follow municipal order VAR 2023-0155. Everyone must arrive 15 minutes before the ceremony: late couples may wait for the end of the day’s weddings or be moved to another date. Phones go off, no flags or banners are allowed, and you leave the room as soon as it ends. In and near the rooms there is no running or jostling, no firecrackers, fireworks or mortars, and no confetti of paper, fabric or plastic. A wedding procession must keep to the highway code.
- **Drones:** French rules ban flights at night, over gatherings of people and over public space in a built-up area, so the Peyrou and the Comédie are out unless a photographer has gone through the special procedure. The airport is close to Grammont and the estates on that side of the city: check the official restriction map, even for a private park.
- **The legal route:** One of you, or a parent, must live in Montpellier, with continuous residence of more than a month when the file goes in; certificates of accommodation are not accepted. Book the appointment online (the wait can reach 45 days), come together, and file at least a month ahead. Foreign partners add a certificat de coutume and proof of single status, under six months old, legalised or apostilled and translated. An interpreter is required if either of you or a witness doesn’t master French.

## Questions about marrying in Montpellier

### Can we get legally married in Montpellier?

Only if one of you, or a parent, lives there, with more than a month’s continuous residence when you file. Otherwise most couples from abroad marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at one of the estates around the city.

### Can we reserve our date early?

Not with the city. Its flyer says the registry office doesn’t reserve dates in advance: the date is set when the file goes in, by appointment, at least a month before. The wait for an appointment can reach 45 days, so don’t book a venue for a fixed date without planning for this.

### Where are civil weddings held?

In one of two rooms: the Domaine de Grammont, avenue Albert-Einstein, or the Hôtel de Ville, Place Georges-Frêche. The dossier names both, so ask the service which is yours before you print invitations; both ask everyone to be there 15 minutes early.

### Can we throw confetti after the ceremony?

Not at the rooms: the city’s rules ban confetti of paper, fabric and plastic in the space set aside for the ceremony and near the windows of the wedding rooms, along with firecrackers and fireworks. Keep them for the reception, if the venue agrees.

### When is the best time to marry in Montpellier?

May and June: average highs of about 23–27 °C and rain on only a few days a month. September is warm too, but autumn’s heavy storms begin, with 87 mm on four or five days. July is the driest and among the hottest, with 30 °C or more on about 14 days.
