Two of France’s great wine regions lie east and south-east of Paris. In Champagne, around Reims and Épernay, vine-covered hills sit above miles of cellars dug into the chalk; in Burgundy, the narrow slope of the Côte d’Or runs south from Dijon past Beaune, its vineyards divided into small plots called climats. Both landscapes are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Weddings gather around a château or a wine estate: a ceremony in the park or among the vines, a toast in the cellars, and dinner in a stone barn or the hall of an old abbey.

## When to marry in Burgundy & Champagne

- **Best:** June, July, August, September
- **Good with planning:** May, October

June to September is the season: warm days, cooler nights and the fewest rainy days in late summer. May is green but showery, and October mild and golden, with cold nights by the end of the month. The harvest — from late August in Champagne, in September in Burgundy — is the wine houses’ busiest time.

- **Spring:** The vines come into leaf, the fields turn yellow with rapeseed and the days are mild; frost and showers are still possible.
- **Summer:** Long, warm days among the vines, with storms building on some afternoons; dinners outside run late into the evening.
- **Harvest and autumn:** Pickers in the rows from late August into September, then the slopes turning gold and red and the mornings misty.

## Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

- **Castles and moated manors:** Châteaux and country houses with moats, formal gardens and old trees — the ceremony, the dinner and the rooms in one place.
- **Wine estates and Champagne houses:** Domaines among the vines and Champagne houses with chalk cellars — a toast underground, then dinner above.
- **Abbeys and priories:** Former abbeys and priories of pale stone in the countryside, with cloisters and vaulted halls for the ceremony or the dinner.
- **Wine villages and canals:** Stone villages with a church and a wash-house among the vines, and quiet tree-lined canals for portraits and a ride on the water.

## How the light falls

Low, rolling hills give wide skies and a long evening light. The Côte d’Or faces east and south-east, so its vines are brightest in the morning and fall into the hill’s shadow before sunset, while the plateau above holds the last light. In autumn, mornings often begin with mist in the valleys.

## Getting there

Fly into Paris: fast trains reach Reims in about 45 minutes and Dijon in about an hour and a half, and Lyon’s airport is closer for southern Burgundy. The estates are spread across the countryside, so plan cars or a coach for the guests.
