Bordeaux is a city of eighteenth-century stone along a curve of the Garonne, listed by UNESCO and ringed by famous vineyards — the Médoc, Saint-Émilion, the hills between the two rivers. To the west lie pine forests, long Atlantic beaches and Arcachon Bay; inland to the east, the castles of the Dordogne; to the south, the Basque coast.

Here a château is usually a wine estate, and some of them host weddings: a ceremony among the vines, then dinner in the courtyard or in the hall where the barrels age.

## When to marry in Bordeaux & the South West

- **Best:** June, July, August, September
- **Good with planning:** May, October

June to September are warm and mostly dry, with the fewest rainy days in July and August. On the coast the Atlantic keeps the heat in check, though inland Bordeaux can be hot. Rain picks up in October and peaks in November and December; the Basque coast is greener and wetter all year.

- **Spring:** The vines come into leaf, the meadows are green and the days mild; April and May can be showery.
- **Summer:** Long, warm days and late sunsets over the ocean. The coast fills with holidaymakers in July and August, while inland stays calmer.
- **Harvest and autumn:** The harvest from mid-September, when the estates are at their busiest, then vines turning red and gold and the first Atlantic storms.

## Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

- **Wine châteaux:** Estates with a manor house, a courtyard and rows of vines to the horizon — the ceremony among the vines, dinner in the cellar or under the trees.
- **Bordeaux itself:** Grand stone halls and riverside quays, for a city ceremony and portraits along long, pale façades.
- **Manors of the Dordogne and Gascony:** Old stone manors and farmhouses in the hills, with a pool and a long table — a weekend for everyone in one place.
- **The Atlantic coast:** Oyster villages on Arcachon Bay, the great dune, pine forests and surf beaches all the way down to the Basque country.

## Towns and places in Bordeaux & the South West

- [Biarritz](https://lensandvows.com/france/bordeaux/biarritz): An imperial resort on the Basque coast: the Atlantic in front, the Pyrenees on clear days, and the sun going down over the sea after half past nine in June. (Markdown: https://lensandvows.com/france/bordeaux/biarritz.md)

## How the light falls

On the coast the sun sets straight into the Atlantic, so evenings on the dune and the beaches are long and golden; in late June it goes down around ten to ten. Inland, the vines run in lines that catch low, raking light at either end of the day. Summer middays are bright and flat.

## Getting there

Fly into Bordeaux, or Biarritz for the Basque coast; fast trains from Paris take about two hours. The estates are spread over the countryside, so a car, or transport arranged for the guests, makes the day much easier.
