Vienna, the old imperial capital on the Danube, is a city of palaces: Schönbrunn with its yellow façades and long formal gardens, the Belvedere above its terraced parterres, the Hofburg in the middle of town. Around the old centre runs the Ringstrasse, lined with grand nineteenth-century buildings; inside it are St. Stephen’s Cathedral, narrow lanes and coffee houses with marble tables. Schönbrunn and the historic centre are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

To the north-west, on the slopes of the Vienna Woods, lie vineyards and wine villages with their Heurigen — taverns that pour their own wine in the garden. Couples marry in a palace hall, a church in the old centre or a grand hotel’s ballroom, and some take the dinner out to a tavern among the vines.

## When to marry in Vienna

- **Best:** May, June, September
- **Good with planning:** April, July, August, October, December

May, June and September bring warm days and mild evenings. July and August are the warmest months, hot on some days, and May to August the wettest, the rain often coming in short afternoon storms. December has a charm of its own: from mid-November the Christmas markets light up the squares, though the days are short and cold, and in January and February the ball season fills the palaces.

- **Spring:** Flower beds planted out in the palace gardens, chestnut trees and lilac in bloom in the parks, mild days; April can still be cool and showery.
- **Summer:** Long, warm evenings for dinner in a garden or a glass of wine among the vines; some days are hot, and storms build on summer afternoons.
- **Autumn and winter:** September is warm and golden, with the grape harvest on the city’s hills; in October the parks and the Vienna Woods turn. Then come the Christmas markets and, in January and February, the balls.

## Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

- **Palaces and garden pavilions:** Gilded halls for the ceremony, and formal gardens of clipped avenues, fountains and statues for the portraits.
- **City palaces and grand hotels:** Ballrooms, chandeliers and marble staircases in the old centre and along the Ringstrasse — the ceremony, the dinner and the dancing under one roof.
- **Coffee houses and the old town:** Cobbled lanes, church squares and coffee houses with marble tables and bentwood chairs — for the portraits, or a small celebration after the ceremony.
- **Wine taverns on the hills:** The Heurigen of the wine villages at the city’s edge: a long table in a garden among the vines, with the city below.

## How the light falls

Vienna’s palaces are painted warm yellow and cream, and its pale stone glows in a low sun. The city lies at the eastern end of its time zone, so the sun sets earlier than in Paris or Madrid: around nine at midsummer, around four in December. The best-known gardens fill up by mid-morning; photographers who want them quiet start early.

## Getting there

Vienna’s airport is about twenty minutes from the centre by express train, and trains from Munich, Prague and Budapest arrive at the main station. In town the underground, trams and walking beat the car; the wine taverns on the hills are a short tram or taxi ride out.
