Tyrol is the heart of the Austrian Alps. Its capital, Innsbruck, lies in the Inn valley right below the Nordkette, with the Golden Roof, baroque churches and pastel houses in its old town. To the east lie the old town of Kitzbühel, the limestone walls of the Wilder Kaiser and the Achensee, Tyrol’s largest lake.

Weddings here tend to be small and close to the mountains: vows on a meadow or by a lake, a ceremony in a chapel in the pastures, then dinner in a mountain hut or a valley inn. Many couples marry in Tracht — dirndl and lederhosen.

## When to marry in Tyrol & Innsbruck

- **Best:** June, July, August, September
- **Good with planning:** January, February, March, May, October, December

Late June to September is the season: lifts and mountain huts open, meadows green, warm days in the valleys and cool ones up high. Summer is also the wettest time of year, with storms on many afternoons, so mornings are the safest; September is calmer. Snow often lies in the valleys from December to February, and in the resorts into March; in May and late autumn many lifts and huts close.

- **Early summer:** Wild flowers across the meadows, snow still on the high peaks and the longest days of the year.
- **High summer to autumn:** Warm valleys and cool heights, with storms on many afternoons. In September the cattle come down from the high pastures decked with flowers, and in October the larches turn gold.
- **Winter:** Snow in the valleys and the resorts, short bright days and cold nights — a horse-drawn sleigh, and dinner by a tiled stove.

## Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

- **Mountain huts and high meadows:** Huts and pastures reached by lift or on foot, the peaks all around: vows outside, then dinner in the hut’s wood-panelled Stube.
- **Chapels and village churches:** Small chapels in the pastures and baroque village churches with onion domes, for a quiet ceremony with the mountains beyond.
- **Innsbruck:** The old town’s arcades, the pastel houses along the Inn and the Nordkette above the roofs — portraits in the city, then up the mountain by cable car.
- **Lakes and valley hotels:** The fjord-like Achensee for portraits by the water, and chalet hotels and old farmhouses in the valleys for the guests and the dinner.

## Towns and places in Tyrol & Innsbruck

- [Kitzbühel](https://lensandvows.com/austria/tyrol/kitzbuhel): A walled medieval town between the Hahnenkamm and the Kitzbüheler Horn, where the registry marries couples in the old Rathaus, a museum, a farmhouse parlour or a castle hall. ## How the light falls

The limestone of the Nordkette and the Wilder Kaiser glows pink in the first and last sun while the valleys are already in shade. In the deep valleys the sun drops behind the ridges long before it sets, so photographers here time portraits by the mountains, not the clock: at midsummer it sets around a quarter past nine in Innsbruck, in December before half past four. On a föhn day, when the warm south wind blows, the peaks look close enough to touch.

## Getting there

Fly into Innsbruck, whose airport is just outside the city, or into Munich, about two hours away by car or train; Kitzbühel is a little over an hour by car from Innsbruck or Salzburg. In winter, cars need winter tyres, and chains on some mountain roads.
