Pilgrims have come to St. Wolfgang since at least 1306, and by the end of the 15th century, the parish says, it was among the greatest pilgrimage sites in Christendom, named alongside Rome, Einsiedeln and Aachen; about eighty pilgrim groups still arrive each year. The church, consecrated in 1477, holds the winged high altar Michael Pacher set up in 1481 and the double altar Thomas Schwanthaler added in 1676. In 1930 the operetta “Im weißen Rößl”, set at an inn here, opened in Berlin and made the village famous. The lake itself, 10 km long and up to 113 m deep, is split between Upper Austria and Salzburg: St. Wolfgang is on the Upper Austrian shore, St. Gilgen and Strobl in Salzburg.

The village has its own Standesamt, with a wedding room in the Rathaus, and the lake gives the day its shape: the WolfgangseeSchifffahrt, sailing since 1873, charters its ships for weddings, and the Schafbergbahn, which its operator calls Austria’s steepest cog railway, runs special trains up the mountain. On the next lake to the north, Mondsee marries couples in the Fürstenzimmer of its castle and, on Saturdays, in the basilica where The Sound of Music filmed its wedding in 1964.

## Wedding photographers in St. Wolfgang

They shoot everywhere in Hallstatt & the Salzkammergut — in St. Wolfgang too. Their whole weddings are on their pages.

## Where couples marry in St. Wolfgang

- **The wedding room in the Rathaus:** The market town runs its own Standesamt. Its wedding room in the Rathaus, about 200 m from the Pacher Haus, measures 80 m² and seats up to 60 guests. The registration form asks for your preferred date, time, place, number of guests and whether you will have witnesses; the office answers on weekdays from 7:00 to 13:00 and publishes no list of other places, so ask what it can offer.
- **The pilgrimage church:** Pacher’s gilded, carved altar is the church’s treasure. St. Wolfgang belongs to the Diocese of Linz: register with your home parish and with the parish of the church you want, ideally twelve to six months ahead, and if one of you is not Catholic, the local bishop’s dispensation is needed. The parish is clear about cameras: prayer and worship come first, photography and filming last.
- **On the lake:** The WolfgangseeSchifffahrt charters three ships for weddings: the MS Salzburg for up to 299 people, the MS Wolfgang Amadeus for up to 200 and the paddle steamer Kaiser Franz Josef I, in service since 1873, for up to 100 — in dry weather only. The operator writes of couples saying yes on board: ask the Standesamt whether the civil ceremony can come aboard, or hold a free ceremony on the water after it.
- **A special train up the Schafberg:** Since 1893 the Schafbergbahn has climbed 1,190 m from St. Wolfgang to the summit station at 1,732 m, on gradients of up to 26 %, in 35 minutes; the top of the Schafberg is a 15-minute walk further. Its trains can be hired whole for up to 200 people — for a toast high above the lake, or the ride up for portraits.
- **Mondsee: the castle and the basilica:** The Mondsee registry, shared by six municipalities, marries couples in the Fürstenzimmer of Schloss Mondsee, in slots of three-quarters of an hour. Next door, the basilica of St. Michael takes weddings on Saturdays at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, for up to 1,000 guests. Its rules: the wedding protocol from your home parish at least two months ahead, a service of at most 60 minutes, no recorded music, and no flowers, confetti or rice thrown inside or in front of the church.

## Where to take your portraits

- **The village from the water:** The church tower and the houses along the shore are best seen from the lake: take the ship from the St. Wolfgang Markt pier, or a quiet stretch of the opposite shore. On autumn mornings mist often lies on the water, as across the Salzkammergut, and clears by late morning.
- **The Schafberg summit:** At the top, sheer limestone walls fall away beside the summit ridge, with the Wolfgangsee far below. In 2026 the trains ran to the summit daily from 25 April to 1 November, every 20 minutes at busy times; the 2027 season is not yet published.
- **The Falkenstein:** The old pilgrims’ path from Fürberg over the Falkenstein to St. Wolfgang, past the Falkenstein church of 1626, with the lake far below. The tourist board warns that it needs sure feet and a head for heights, and care in the wet: for a couple in walking shoes, not for a train.
- **The shore at golden hour:** The village faces south across the lake, so late light runs along the water from the west. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at about 21:07 on a flat horizon, golden hour running from 20:19 to 21:32, and on 15 September at 19:20; down by the lake it drops behind the mountains sooner.

## When to marry in St. Wolfgang

The lake season runs from spring to autumn, and summer is also the wettest time. GeoSphere Austria’s data for the St. Wolfgang station, averaged over 1991–2020, give average highs of 22.5 °C in June, 24.5 °C in July, 24.2 °C in August and 19.4 °C in September — and about 150 to 172 mm of rain a month from May to September, on 12 to 15 days. The Schnürlregen, a long, fine rain off the northern mountains, can last a whole day, so plan cover for every outdoor moment. The lake stays cool: measurements from 1999 to 2007 found surface temperatures of at most about 22 °C. In winter the Wolfgangseer Advent fills the village from 13 November to 19 December 2027, Wednesday to Sunday, with long waits at the piers on Advent Saturdays; the three lake towns counted just over a million overnight stays in 2024/25, 413,000 of them in St. Wolfgang.

Hallstatt & the Salzkammergut, month by month:
- **Best:** June, July, August, September
- **Good with planning:** January, February, May, October, December

## Good to know before the day

- **Getting there:** Fly to Salzburg. By car, leave the A1 at Thalgau and drive via St. Gilgen; in St. Wolfgang the road runs through a bypass tunnel, open since 1993. By bus, line 150 from Salzburg’s main station runs to Strobl, where line 546 continues to St. Wolfgang — or get off at St. Gilgen and take the ship. Guests staying at least one night get the Guest Mobility Ticket with the local tourist tax, valid on lines 150, 156 and 546.
- **Parking:** St. Wolfgang has numbered car parks and a multi-storey car park, some of them paid; from the outer ones it is about 20 minutes on foot to the Schafbergbahn. Give guests one meeting point and let the ship or a short walk do the rest.
- **Boats and the lake’s rules:** Combustion outboard motors are banned on the Wolfgangsee all year; combustion-engine boats are banned altogether in July and August, and on Sundays and holidays in May, June and September; jet skis and e-foils are banned, and a night-time ban applies from 21:00 to 07:00. For photos on the water, use the ships, an electric boat or a rowing boat.
- **Drones:** Austro Control’s rules apply: registration for any drone with a camera, insurance, at most 120 m above ground, no flights over crowds and the landowner’s consent to take off. The church, the lake and the Schafberg lie outside Austria’s published drone zones, but nature reserves are not on that map: ask the Land government before flying near one.
- **The legal route:** Any Standesamt in Austria can marry you, wherever you live: it first checks your documents with you both in person, at most six months before the wedding. A church wedding alone has no legal effect.

## Questions about marrying in St. Wolfgang

### Can we get married on a boat on the Wolfgangsee?

The WolfgangseeSchifffahrt charters three ships for weddings, from 100 to 299 guests, the paddle steamer in dry weather only. Whether the legal ceremony can take place on board is for the St. Wolfgang Standesamt to say; otherwise marry in the Rathaus and hold a free ceremony on the water.

### Can we marry in the pilgrimage church if we’re not from here?

Ask the parish: the Diocese of Linz asks couples to register with their home parish and with the parish of the church they want, ideally twelve to six months ahead. If one of you is not Catholic, the bishop’s dispensation is needed.

### Can we marry in the Sound of Music church in Mondsee?

The parish normally expects couples to marry in their home parish, but in agreement with the priest the basilica can be booked, on Saturdays at 11:00, 13:00 or 15:00. Your home parish sends the wedding protocol at least two months ahead — for couples from abroad, through the Diocese of Linz — and the parish charges Catholics from outside a fee.

### Will the Schafbergbahn be running on our date?

In 2026 it ran to the summit daily from 25 April to 1 November, then only to the Schafbergalm for the Advent weeks; the 2027 dates are not published yet. Special trains for up to 200 guests are booked with the operator.

### When is the village busiest?

In summer and on Advent weekends: the Wolfgangseer Advent runs from 13 November to 19 December 2027, Wednesday to Sunday, and the boat operator warns of long waits at the piers on Advent Saturdays. A weekday in June or September is quieter.
