The Salzkammergut, east of Salzburg, is Austria’s lake district: dozens of clear lakes below limestone peaks, in a region named after the salt that made it rich. Salt has been mined above Hallstatt since prehistoric times, and the village, squeezed between the water and the mountain, lies at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Around it are the Wolfgangsee with St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, the Mondsee, Bad Ischl, where the emperor spent his summers, and Gmunden on the Traunsee.

Weddings here are small and close to the water: vows on a jetty or a lakeside lawn, a boat for the portraits, the village church, dinner in an old inn. Some couples marry in Tracht, the local dress — a dirndl, a loden jacket.

## When to marry in Hallstatt & the Salzkammergut

- **Best:** June, July, August, September
- **Good with planning:** January, February, May, October, December

June to September is the season: boats on the lakes, long evenings, water warm enough to swim from July. It is also the wettest time of year — afternoon storms, and Schnürlregen, a fine drizzle that can settle in for a day — so plan cover for every outdoor moment. September is calmer, October often bright and golden. From December to February the higher villages lie under snow, and some lakeside hotels close.

- **Spring and early summer:** Snowmelt on the peaks, wild narcissi in the Aussee meadows in May, and lakes still cold and very clear.
- **Summer:** Warm days on the water — swimming, sailing, wooden boats — and storms building over the mountains in the afternoon.
- **Autumn and winter:** Beech and larch gold in October and mist on the lakes in the morning; in winter, snow on Hallstatt’s roofs and Advent on the Wolfgangsee.

## Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

- **Lakeshores and jetties:** Lawns, jetties and hotel terraces on the Wolfgangsee, the Mondsee and the Traunsee, with a boat for the portraits.
- **Boathouses:** Wooden boathouses with their gables over the water — the lakes’ classic portrait backdrop, best on a still morning.
- **Village churches:** Hallstatt’s church above the lake, St. Wolfgang’s on its shore, the basilica in Mondsee where the wedding in The Sound of Music was filmed, and chapels in the meadows.
- **Spa towns and a lake castle:** The villas of Bad Ischl’s imperial summers, and Gmunden’s castle on its island in the Traunsee, reached by a wooden bridge.

## How the light falls

Mountains drop straight into the lakes, so the sun reaches the valleys late and leaves early, and a still morning doubles everything in the water. Hallstatt faces east: its houses catch the morning sun and fall into shade early. Autumn mornings often start with mist on the water, lifting by mid-morning. At midsummer the sun sets a little after nine, earlier behind the mountains.

## Getting there

Fly into Salzburg: St. Gilgen is about half an hour away by car, Hallstatt about an hour and a quarter. Trains run to Gmunden, Bad Ischl and Hallstatt, whose station is across the lake, linked to the village by a small ferry. Cars stay outside Hallstatt’s centre, so guests walk the last stretch.
