Austria is a country of mountains and lakes, with Vienna and the Danube in the east, and its wedding season follows the land: the lakes and the valleys from May to September, Vienna, Salzburg and the Wachau on into October and the grape harvest, and the Alps a second season of their own, in the snow.

Only the civil wedding is legally binding in Austria, and couples from abroad can have it: any registry office — the Standesamt — can marry you, wherever you live, in its own rooms or at a place it has approved, from palaces in Vienna to castles by the lakes. Many couples add a church wedding or a free ceremony at their venue.

## Where in Austria

- **Salzburg:** Best: June, July, August, September; Good with planning: May, October, December
- **Hallstatt & the Salzkammergut:** Best: June, July, August, September; Good with planning: January, February, May, October, December
- **Tyrol & Innsbruck:** Best: June, July, August, September; Good with planning: January, February, March, May, October, December
- **Carinthia & Lake Wörthersee:** Best: June, July, August, September; Good with planning: May, October
- **The Wachau Valley:** Best: May, June, September; Good with planning: April, July, August, October

## What each season brings

- **Spring (March – May):** Fresh green valleys under snowy peaks, and apricot blossom in the Wachau in late March or early April. Changeable weather and cold lakes; the season starts in May.
- **Summer (June – August):** The main season: long, warm days, sunsets around nine, lakes warm enough to swim. Also the wettest months: in the Alps, afternoon thunderstorms are common — keep a plan B under a roof.
- **Autumn (September – October):** Often the most settled weather of the year: clear days, the grape harvest in the Wachau and around Vienna, and golden larches in the mountains in October. Misty mornings in the valleys.
- **Winter (November – February):** Short days and, from December, snow in the Alps — chalets and ski resorts. Vienna’s ball season peaks in January and February: gowns, tails and waltzes in palace ballrooms.

## Three ways to say yes

What makes a wedding legally binding in Austria, in short. Couples from abroad can marry here legally, at any registry office — with some paperwork first.

- **Civil:** The only legally binding wedding. A registrar marries you at the registry office, the Standesamt, or, for an extra fee, at another place it accepts as fitting — many towns have approved palaces, castles, wine estates and hotels. Any Standesamt in Austria can marry you, wherever you live. Same-sex couples have been able to marry since 2019, even if their own country doesn’t allow it — though it may not recognise the marriage.
- **Religious:** A church or other religious wedding has no legal effect in Austria. The law no longer requires the civil wedding first, but the churches expect it: a Catholic wedding without one needs the bishop’s permission. Each faith has its own steps.
- **Symbolic:** Any place, any words, any celebrant — but no legal weight. Some couples marry at the Standesamt, then hold a free ceremony (freie Trauung) at their venue; others sign the papers at home.

### Before any legal wedding

First the Standesamt checks that you are free to marry — the Ermittlung der Ehefähigkeit: an interview with you both, in person, based on your documents, no more than six months before the wedding, since the result is valid for six months. There is no waiting period after it. A foreign partner typically brings a passport, a birth certificate and recent proof of marital status from home — a certificate of no impediment, or what their country issues instead — translated by a court-sworn interpreter and, where required, apostilled or legalised. If one of you doesn’t speak enough German, an interpreter takes part; witnesses are optional.

Rules and documents change and depend on your nationality: always check with the Standesamt where you will marry, and with your own country’s embassy or consulate in Austria, before you set a date.
